Constipation

17 years ago 0 20 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I have been taking psyllium pills for a couple of years now. I find the best time to take them is just before I eat lunch. I only take one a day. I also take a multivitimin and b12 (the kind that is suspsose to dissolve under the tongue, I just chew them up.) So I have not had any real problems with constipation. Otis

I also have been suffering with this side effect I've had to take a laxative every other night for the last week. Hopefully this does not last too much longer My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/16/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 9 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 141 Amount Saved: $99 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 2 Mins: 22 Seconds: 15

read deeper into your chantix patient info--it IS a side effect.

OK, I did some searching and didn't see a discussion on this topic. Kind of embarrassing, but what the heck. I'm approaching a month without smokes, and I'm still experiencing stomach problems/constipation. Except for my 4 day bout with the flu, I've pretty much been stopped up the whole time. I've been exercising (running/walking about 8 miles per week) and taking 2 Benefiber pills every day. Oh yeah, I'm also taking Chantix although, I don't think constipation is a side effect of that particular drug. Are any of you experiencing this problem? Any advice? How long did it last? Yes! I am experiencing the same thing. I've been curious about this too, but didn't want to ask! :confuse: My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 25 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 761 Amount Saved: $150 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 9 Mins: 49 Seconds: 30

I'm also enduring this...uh..."sympton of recovery". I'm using the Commit lozenge, so it seems this issue isn't exclusive to Chantix. I wish it were, though! :p It does seem that I'm gradually getting better so I'll just put up with it for another week before I give the doc a call. I'm sure he'll enjoy hearing about it as much as I'll enjoy telling him about it! It's not so bad talking about it here because it's anonymous! :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 34 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,393 Amount Saved: $165.58 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 11 Mins: 41 Seconds: 41

Constipation is definitley a factor in quitting and you are all quite right the medications add to the issue, Constipation is caused by dehydration and this is caused in this case by the meds so H2o is a very natural fix. Sip it as often as you can, I find ingesting large amounts at once unsettling. This along with roughage such as whole grains and certain fruits and nuts work well. Try ansd stay away firom more medication if possible we don't want too much going through our system. Natural is always better. Den2 :) :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 48 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 489 Amount Saved: $480 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 22 Mins: 20 Seconds: 42

Grizzld: Oh, yes, is is very much a side effect of Chantix for many of us. Mine got so bad I had to see my doctor for a special prescription to counteract it. I stayed on the Chantix through the duration, but struggled mightily with constipation. Within a week or two of stopping the Chantix, things are finally back to normal. Hang in there, but don't let it get too bad. See your doctor. One other comment to all you other Chantix users: For the first week or two after I quit the Chantix, I really felt nervous and edgy. I decided I had better do another 12 weeks, but for one reason or another, I couldn't get the prescription right away. After two weeks, the feelings eased somewhat, so I decided to stay off the Chantix. To tell you the truth, I think I was getting addicted to the Chantix! But it's much better now and I'm glad I didn't get another prescription for it. Just thought you might want to know. Keep the faith My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 109 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,387 Amount Saved: $872 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 8 Mins: 17 Seconds: 7

I started taking fibre tablets around the time I quit, and I try to eat all bran cereal with psyllium fibre in it. Bought dried prunes as well! Hey whatever it takes.
