Thank you all for your encouraging responses! I'm doing okay today. I don't even consider smoking for a minute. Smoking?... eewww who would want to do that filthy habit? I've had a bit of a headache today, and have been coughing. Guess it's "lung cleaning" time. I've lived through worse than this, so it will be okay. Chewing about 4 pieces of 2 mg nicorette each day has helped take off the edge, and I rewarded myself with an espresso machine yesterday, so tried it out this morning, and it was SOOO wonderful! I even feel like I have a bit of a brain back today! YEAH! This is my second day... 34 hours now without a smoke. I'm having nicorette with my coffee this morning. Tossed and turned all night last night, and dreamed of having a cigarette. Finally carried one around in my dream, but never smoked it. I feel like my mind has become obsessed with quitting, (or wanting to smoke) and it's making me feel nuts! I have no intention of going to get cigarettes, as I won't let that thought enter my head. I've never gone this long without smoking and I've gotten this far, I'm going to keep going. Any tips on getting the crappy thoughts to go away? Thanks, Rusty! Yes... I tend to obsess on whatever is at the forefront of my mind. Hate wasting that "thought time" on smoking! Felt a little nuts when I first got up this morning, but am better now. Smoking will not make the feeling go away. The guild I will feel for smoking will make it worse, I'm afraid. I've gone too far this time and I'm just going to have to figure out a way to deal with it for awhile. Interesting: You're doing great! The obsessive thoughts are SO much a part of the first few days and sometimes longer. Our entire identities were tied to smoking (pretty sad, isn't it?), so it's only natural that you're going to think constantly about smoking. Distract yourself in any way you can think of and know that you will reach a point where you will go hours and then days without thinking about it. It's true. Hang in there, that will be a great reward. I know the first time I realized I had gone all day without even thinking about smoking, I was very excited.j It told me I had made a major breakthrough in beating this damned addiction. I like the advice to do internet research on addiction. See my post in Coping with Cravings -- it's a great piece from some research I did. I love Imallclear's suggestion that we're all a part of your Verizon team, standing behind you. That made me laugh -- good one, Imallclear. It's a great visual. Keep the faith! Everyone here has given you great responses. The only things I could add are 1) try to dis associate smoking from your environment and/or activities - a) re-arrange your routine (have coffee in the dinning room instead of the kitchen, Just getting on this site during the time when you might otherwise have a cigarette is a change in routine), b) re-arrange your furniture 2) occupy your mouth - candy, straws, cinnamon sticks,gum, 3) get physical when you want to grab a cigarette - jog, walk the dog, paint the house. Realize that a crave will pass whether you have a cigarette or not. Envision yourself handling this with grace. When all else fails think of us, your personal Verizon team standing behind you and just reach out your hand. That's it! You're going great! That's it interesting! Replacements/distractions is the key to a great quit. Remember even the smallest of things to distract you from smoking can help you with your cravings! These will then become your 'new' habits. One of my biggest new habits and the hardest one still in my quit is having breakfast and a hot cup of coffee and then coming online. I used to smoke one before breakfast, one or two after and then come online... So 1st thing in the a.m. for me is still very hard but after an hour of awake time I'm finally 'myself' again. My hubby is very lucky that he doesn't see me 1st thing, else he'd lose his mind with me! LOL! Hang in there and keep posting sweetie! It will pass and get better and better and better. I agree that coping tools and distractions (especially constructive ones like exercising and cleaning) are critical. hi interesting, what you are feeling is perfectly normal it is your body starting to get rid of all the rubbish from smoking. Interesting...My advice would be to stay busy. Take a walk, read a book. I bought a couple relaxation tapes and listened to them when things got tough. One day at a day, one hour, or one minute.
