I have experienced this.
In a previous quit I encountered some severe chest discomfort. It wasn't pain, but yes the pounding (almost coming out of your chest) feeling, the fluttering. I attributed it to ++ anxiety at that time.
I have felt it this quit too. For me, it is caffeine related. Nicotine allows the body to process caffeine at twice the normal rate. So when we quit, we should decrease our caffeine intake. That's coffee, chocolate and Cola's. When I am experiencing this irregular heart beat when I am anxious, I make a conscious effort to concentrate on my breathing and trying to calm myself.
Certainly if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, tingling in the arm, blurred vision or any other symptoms seek medical attention. In fact I agree that you should probably see a doctor anyhow. That person is the best to assess you properly.
