anxiety worse after baby

20 years ago 0 5 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I responded to this post in 2003, and since then I had another baby and similar thoughts. I finally got help. It turned out I had (and still have) postpartum OCD. I was also going through postpartum depression, anxiety, and panic. It's all realted. I started taking Zoloft, going to therapy, and attending a support group. The support group seemed to help the most. Since then I have become an advocate for postpartum disorders, especially postpartum OCD. The thing to remember is that if the thoughts disturb you, be happy because it means that the chances of you acting on those thoughts is very slim. People with postpartum psychosis typically aren't disturbed by the thoughts because they don't view them as abnormal and in some cases may think they're pretty good ideas.

Hi Melinda, I just came across your post and my heart went out to do. I'm curious to know how your doing? Did you end up getting the help that you were seeking. I have read that people with OCD have those thoughts, they never want/or would act on those thoughts (hurting people) I know when my thoughts get out of control they can be terrible which scares me to death. I think society should really look more into these type of thoughts. I'm sure there are a lot of people who suffer from the same thing you do and they are scared to death to go get help for the reason that they think there going to end up in a psych ward. I hope your doing ok, let us know. Your in my thoughts :)

When I have a thought of hurting my children does this mean I'm really crazy when I picture it in my head and almost feel like I can't stop my self? I am so sick of these thoughts let me tell you I wish I could just pull them out of my head sometimes:( I stopped taking paxil and almost went off the deep end, now I'm back on it so I can think more clearly now better then on Tues of last week when I went into choate services. It' was horrible let me tell you guys I never thought turning for help would back fire on me never in my life:( But I'm not going to keep it some big secret either i want to talk about it and get it off my chest and let other people know how I really feel inside if not then I feel like I really am going to lose it:( anyone else feel like this?

A certain amount of apprehension is to be expected when entering parenthood. Parenthood bring on responsibilities that weren't all considered before. So it's ok to wonder about those things and to make contingency plans by having a will and appointing guardianship of the child or children, etc. And if you don't think of it, the insurance company ads will remind you. :) It's also ok to reduce high risk-taking because of parental responsibility. In fact it's the expected thing to do. That does not mean you stop living, but you don't undertake activities that have a high possibility of endangering your life or the life of your child. Congratulations on your baby.

I was fine for a few years, no panic attacks. Then I had my baby. I turned into the biggest worrier ever to exist (or so I thought). I constantly had images in my head of horrible things that could happen to my baby. What if the knife slips while I'm chopping up veggies for dinner, soars across the kitchen and living room, and lands on my baby, killing her? What if there's an earthquake and something falls on my baby? What if a plane crashes into my house? What if I drop dead and my baby has to grow up without me? What if I drop dead and she goes hungry, crying from starvation, until someone finally discovers her and hopefully before it's too late? What if I go crazy and kill my own child (it was all over the news at the time with the Andrea Yates thing ... hey it happened to her, what if it happened to me)? What if? What if? I kept telling myself that I was just overreacting. But all the worries just kept popping up in my head. I couldn't control them. I couldn't relax. Finally I saw a short Australian film (only 6 minutes long) on Oxygen called, "Living with Happiness", about a woman who has a baby and goes through all of the terrible thoughts that I had been experiencing. I was so thrilled to see that I wasn't the only one that this has happened to. It was obviously so common that somebody made a movie about it! It finally helped me to relax. I apparently wasn't so crazy after all. It turns out worrying about death after you have a new baby is pretty normal.

Congratulations to you! I also has a baby (in march) and during the pregnancy I started having PA's and anxiety issues that I had not had in years. I have gotten through this before so I know there is the "other side" of it. Its so easy to let things snowball after a baby through...so much of it is "normal"...lack of sleep, your body is out of whack, you feel gross in general. Also, you don't get out much anyway and even to people without panic disorder, its stressful to get out with a new one...especially with a 5 year old in tow. I guess what I am saying is I know how you feel. Please feel free to share with me how you are doing. I think it would help to talk to someone who is in a similar situation. I have opted to not go on meds. I was not on anything before my pregnancy, but I was also not experiencing an unmanageable level of anxiety then either. I am nursing now so I'm afraid to start anything new. Have a great day and I hope to hear from you soon! my email is loraelaine@hotmail.com if you'd like to write. I also have msn im

Thank you so much! My son will be 5 next Wednesday, and our daughter is our second. I'm taking 40mg of paxil a day with xanax on ocassion....but sometimes it still dosen't help. I'm searching for a new med due to the vanishing act my libido has performed on paxil. thanks for the support, melisa

He Melissa, Congratulations on your little angel! You're not alone. I felt the same way after I had my son. I was so worried that I wouldn't be around to raise him, or something horrible would happen to him. It's all part of the disorder. If you're nursing, then medication may not be an option, you'd have to discuss that with your healthcare professional. (I wasn't medicated when my son was an infant) My son is 5 and I've found new things to panic over. It's a long struggle, but keep your chin up, and I'll be praying for you and your little angel. God bless. DJ

Hi Melisa, Congratulations on your new baby :). A new little one in our lives may cause us to experience many emotions! Have you discussed these feeling with your doctor? If you have the time, maybe it is best to see your doctor and discuss with him/her how you are feeling? Thank you for posting this morning and letting us know how you are feeling. We look forward to hearing from you again soon. Take care, Melanie

I jsut recently had a baby and my anxiety has blown up. I had high blood pressure during my pregnancy and am still being treated for it...now I worry all day about having a stroke and my children growing up without me. I know it's silly, but I can relax or get the feelings of doom under control. I'll try anything, or appreciate any support. my aim sn is cybercurlz if anyone wants to discuss anxiety issues.
