If it's only 1/2 hour ride in the car why don't you just be honest with him and ask him to refrain from smoking that half hour in the car because your quit is so new to you. If he is a good friend, I think he would love to support you. I too was with a good friend that smoked the first week I quit but she didn't smoke in any vehicle and we were outside most of the time so it was ok. Actually I didn't even really want one when she had one. Just be strong and keep remembering you are now a non-smoker and have 7 days into your quit. This quit is for you and you deserve it.' I agree with Bon Bon that i cant see it being a problem if he doesnt smoke in the car. Although personally I would prefer the smell of fresh smoke it smells better than stale tobacco (But i know second hand smoke and all) A few days after i quit, I went to breakfast with my work colleague as i always did. She smoked. It didnt bother me, because she was a smoker, and i wasnt. Most of the time it doesnt bother me, unless it is the weekend and we are out drinking. Unfortunately smokers are all around us, you have to live with that. I have housed alcoholics who have complained about where they were housed, simply because the walk to the shops they had to walk past a number of pubs, and there was an off licence (where u can buy take away alcohol) next door to post office..... I always say to them, the choice to drink or not to drink is yours. At the end of the day, the temptations will always be there. You just have to make the choice not to act upon it. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Valic, You've received some good advice from members. Have your coping mechanisms ready. Although he smokes outside, you may be tempted. Some members have found it helpful to carry gum or candy with them, take deep breaths, hold/chew on a straw or drink a glass of water. Let us know how it goes. Hi valic - I just want to say: be careful... there have been so many Quits lost here by testing them... You sound very focused in your Quit - please make sure to protect it with everything you have right now. This addiction is so very tricky... valic - Be careful... VERY carefui. Set some boundaries... Not sure why you can't get out of it, but can't you simply ask your friend not to smoke? This is a great opportunity to set some boundaries and learn how to protect your Quit in the toughest times. No one can protect your Quit like you can. It's a choice, make the safest one for YOU... It is in fact, you life, right? If it were me and this early in my Quit (and I have had no slips to date with none planned:) I would not put myself out there in such a tempting situation... As always, take what works for you and leave the rest:) Blessings be- Healer My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 136 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,779 Amount Saved: $632.4 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 17 Mins: 0 Seconds: 59

You've got the right attitude going on. It is always a choice. You can do it. Have a great time reminising with your buddy. That should keep your mind off of smoking. Great preparation. Valic, This was a big test and you passed! You are definitely on the right track, so keep using those mechanisms and definitely avoid situations if you are not ready :) We are always here for support, so post often! Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
