Valic, I was faced with a double whammy yesterday a real test of my quit. Not only did i go to my newly ex husbands place but he smokes like a chimney. I sat out on the back porch while he smoked his cigarette inside, he asked me why i wasnt coming in and i said. I dont smoke He said oh i understand it makes you want one, i sat and thought about it, then said, well no it doesnt actually the smell of your cigarette is making me nauseous. He finished his cigarette and said ok come in and refrained from smoking the whole 45 mins i was there (he usually chain smokes). My point is that if they do care about you and respect you, they will support you and help you through this difficult period. Be strong Valic, just keep reminding yourself that you are a non smoker and remember the reasons why you are quitting :) Celeste My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 8 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 201 Amount Saved: $81.6 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 16 Mins: 58 Seconds: 1

Tomorrow I am seeing an old friend of mine that I haven't seen in awhile. But he smokes. And I will be in a car for about 1/2 hr with him and he will smoke. I will prolly be in the front seat. I am still very early in my quit and I don't want to slip. But I can't get out of this. Any tips on what to do? P.S. It will just be in the car. He smokes on his porch not in his house so I won't have to deal with cig smoke while we hang out. Thanks a bunch, ~Valic My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 37 Amount Saved: $37.1 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 12 Mins: 24 Seconds: 30

Thanks BonBon, Yes I could just ask him. But he has been a smoker for a long time, but he is a friend so he might not light up. However, he happens to be a chain smoker we shall see. Thanks for the great advice, that will be the first thing I do when I get into the car with him. Have a great smoke free day, ~Valic My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 37 Amount Saved: $37.1 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 12 Mins: 29 Seconds: 57

I made it through!I can't believe it! My friend didn't smoke in the car when I asked that was nice. But we did go to the mall (which is non-smoking) He did have one on the way from the car to the mall but I just kept popping my mints and breathing. He even stood away from me until he finished it. However, I could still smell it on him it made me crave one. And when I went to hug him the smell got on me and I was craving last nite. But I took a shower to get the smell off me and then went right to bed. This morning woke up with a HUGE craving but just ate breakfast as usual and tried to ignore it. I made it through but I don't think I am ready yet to be around smokers. Too risky. But I didn't smoke and thats the great part. My husband is doing something special for me tonight and for a reward to myself I am getting a massage on Sunday. I am just glad I didn't give in to the junk thoughts! Thanks to everyone for all the advice I wouldn't have made it through without thinking of all the people on here who support my quit! Have a great smoke free weekend. ~Valic My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 9 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 47 Amount Saved: $47.7 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 15 Mins: 46 Seconds: 23

Thanks Healer and Tina for those awesome words of advice! Tina I have my coping skills ready. Gum, mints, Jolly Ranchers (hard candy) and of course a sports bottle of fruit flavored water. And yes I plan on having all the windows down if my friend plans to smoke! Healer: I am very committed. When I was still smoking I came on this site and stumbled upon a post of all the bad things I was inhaling to myself. I was disgusted! And I thought I am paying to do this to myself! Not any more. I mean its fine if my friend wants to do it but not this girl, not one second more! I want to be around so me and my husband can have children and see them grow up! Si thanks everyone and I am confident in myself that I will be o.k. (although a little part of me is scared! ) N.O.P.E. ~Valic My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 8 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 43 Amount Saved: $42.4 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 34 Seconds: 37

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I am sure my friend will refrain from smoking if I ask him too. A tiny part of me wants to see if I can handle it though. But I really don't want to jeopordize my quit either. But I am not going to smoke. Even if I have to get out of the car and walk back to my house I will not smoke. N.O.P.E. is my motto and I am going to stick with it. Thanks for everyone's help and patience. I could not be as committed without this site and everyone on it! I will let you all know how I cope with getting through this time. If your friend absolutly has to smoke in the car then at least keep the windows cracked and keep your hands and mouth busy. Take along some gum, hard candy, a bag of chips, etc. Also make sure to bring a bottle of water with you. When we were smokers we often confused feelings of thirst or hunger with a need for a cigarette. If you have a craving in the car tell yourself that you are really just thristy and drink some water. If all else fails tell your frined to pull over to the side of the road and get out and stretch your legs. On my last quit I was 5 days in and I had to go on a 26 hour car ride with my smoker husband. I made it and so can you :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 124 Amount Saved: $21 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 7 Mins: 12 Seconds: 44

I knew you could do it!!! And that was really nice of your friend not to smoke in the car for your sake. My husband has been smoking outside and taking all his cigareets to work with him to help me in my quit :) Glad to hear you made it and I hope you had a great time :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 4 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 162 Amount Saved: $28 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 9 Mins: 23 Seconds: 21
