Problem with Nicorette Gum

18 years ago 0 6 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
[color=Red]I'm about ready to switch to the patch! In three days I have bitten my tongue and upper lip too many times. I'm now so aware of the pain that I don't think about cigs as much. Is this meant to be aversion therapy? Also, why can't the manufacture make the gum easier to get open. When your hands are shaking and your heart is racing from a nicotine fit, you really don't want to struggle getting your gum fix out of a plastic entrapment. What do others think of the gum over the patch? Can I alternate using both? Mater, I can't do gum because I have bad teeth. So last time i quit smoking, I tryed the lozenges and I liked those too, a little too much. I don't think I would ever be able to give those up. So this time, i am doing patches and useing sugar free hard candy for mouth stuff, although I still have to carefull and not do too much because that will also hurt my teeth and the sugar substitute in them can give you gas really bad. Anyways, I find the patches just take the edge off the cravings. You still have to deal with them as they come. I am doing wellbutrin because I am a little concerned about when I need to step down on the patches. I want to be ready. Everyone is different, maybe you could buy the smallest box of patches (21mg they have a box that just has 7) and try it. I started out cold turkey and changed my mind to the patches. You always have the freedom to change your mind! Mater, Maybe switching to the lozenge would be a better option for you? The patch is a little more complicated as the lowest dose provides 7mg of nicotine as opposed to 2mg found in the gum or lozenge. Also the patch must be worn 24/7 and is a slow release not quick release like the lozenge. Hope that helps, Danielle ________________________________ The SSC Support Team

Hi there. I think your problem with the gum may lie in how you are using it. It is meant to be chewed on sort of a scheduled basis to relieve the severity of withdrawl. You should not wait until you are in the middle of a terrible craving before chewing a piece - it does not have the punch to knock out a craving - you may be chomping like mad to achieve a relief that is just not there. Chew a piece of gum very slowly when you believe you may be experiencing a "desire" for a smoke - this will lessen the severity when the "craving" hits - but don't expect it to have the hit of a smoke - it is just not there - just use it to take the edge off before you reach the desperate stage. Hope this helps. Good luck.
