NEED HELP

This is what I get for bragging. Can anyone give me any hints on what to do for long drives? I left for vacation this past Saturday and had a breakdown in the car after 8 hours of driving. I didn't smoke but I lost it. Any advice will be greatful. I will be heading back home this Saturday. Thanks, Darcy

Thanks everyone for all the great advice. I think I just spent too much time in the vehicle without a break. It was actually a 16 hr trip. On the way back we will do it in two days which will help. I will take those little stretch breaks and I brought a ton of hard sugarfree candy with me, my meditation tape and lots of bottled water. My hubby will just have to get over it, he didn't want to stop until I broke out sobbing and screaming that I had to get out of the car!!! When we did finally stop, it was at McDonalds and I had a hot fudge sundae and that made me feel good!! Thanks again everyone, God bless and stay strong. Aha its Darcy.. We have the same quit date.. Not seen u for a while. So this laser treatment didnt work fully? My advice would be - to take all of those things listed above, there is some good advice there. but to also take the Allen Carr Easyway to stop smoking. It will answer all your reasons for smoking (Im bored, I can afford it, I enjoy smoking, it relaxes me, it relieves stress,it stops me from eating) you know all those stupid things we tell ourselves. By now your quit should be mental not physical(U are doing great btw)... Water and I find that breathing excercises work on long trips. I know its bad, but its the rythm of smoking, and i find after a few deep breaths i dont want to smoke anyway. I used gum and almonds. The nuts especially helped me for some reason! Then I just also kept focused on my reasons why I quit to start with. Hope that helps! Darcy, TIME FOR A REWARD. You didn't smoke on your trip at all even after having a bad time after the 8 hours. Make sure you pick something up on your travels, also as suggested by Rusty that treat yourself every 100 miles. That is really great advice. I would take all the wonderful suggestions by members in this thread here and pack myself up and keep strong. You have alot here to put in your arsenal! Let us know how it goes, we are all here for you :) Many Blessings, Eve My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 89 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 716 Amount Saved: $267 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 12 Mins: 40 Seconds: 33

Hi Darcy, best thing to do is bring all of your coping meachanisms with you and keep them close by. I have my Red Hots sitting in my cup holder. Sing along to the radio, fidget with the dial, chew gum, just don't smoke. I stopped freqently to stretch and drink water for my first non-smoking trip, this seemed to help. Drive a little at a time. IF it takes longer so what.... you will arrive a non-smoker! Darcy... Peppermints really worked for me. Take a lot of deep breaths and keep reminding yourself how good it feels not to HAVE to smoke anymore. Be sure to stop every couple of hours so you can stretch and clear your mind. You can do it. Listen to some old songs on the radio too. Sing along. Have a good trip! Darcy, right after I quit, I had to make an 8-hour drive. Lots of suggestions came to me from SSC members: 1. Book or cd on tape 2. Lots of your favorite music. 3. Snacks 4. Cooler with water and fruit. 5. Set some mini-rewards for yourself. For every 100 miles, give yourself a treat of some kind. 6. Stop every hour or so and do some deep breathing. 7. As JohnW always says, take life in the slow lane...don't be in a hurry. If you get tired or anxious, stop the car and do something else for a bit. 8. Think about how you will reward yourelf when you get home, as a successful non-smoking traveler! Good luck! Turkey or beef jerky - good for the hands and mouth and relatively low calories. Sunflower seeds. Maybe a spray air freshener so that you can keep the inside smelling nice to remind you how bad smoking would smell. Stay strong!
