I felt the same way with the patch and I had to use the gum to quit. For me, it was the only thing that worked. It took 3 months but by the end, it was relatively pain free. I noticed that about once a week, I would get a day where the cravings were strong but after 2 months, that stopped too.
I had to stay away from any alcoholic drinks because I associated that with smoking. I also stayed away from smokers during that time. When I finally was able to drink a glass of wine, I kept some gum on hnad just in case I got a craving. Now when I am around smokers, I tell myself how much it stinks and I try not to get too close to them because I don't want to breathe their smoke.
Take one day at a time. Some of the things I did when cravings hit: brush my teeth and look at how much whiter they are, wash walls to remove smoke stains, go in my closet and smell how nice my clothes are now, go for walks, do stretching exercises, etc. Do ANYTHING to keep your mind busy. Tell yourself the craving will go away in about 10 minutes if you can just hang on. It WILL go away.
