When I quit(a whole 27 days ago) the night before my quit date I ran out of cigarettes at about 4.30pm. Coming from a long line of cowards I decided to buy 10 to see me through the evening. Would you believe there was a sign at the shop saying'back in 30 mins' Omen or what??????? Anyway I thought forget it(and have!!!) Phil

Honestly you guys are lucky you have the right. My hubby still smokes, I look around and see those nasty butttrays everywhere. We only used to do it on back porch and sunroom. He decided he would start on the front now to. So now when I go to get the mail those things are there. I almost kicked on off the porch, but the tray was a gift from a dead relitive of his. So I figured I better not. I have also been realy having bad junkie thoughts the past 2days. W/him being here. I have stared at his pack more times than I can count. It would be so much easier if I did not have to see it what so ever. I will say this though. Looking at a buttray w/water in it, will make u puke. so that helps. I also have trained my mind to despise any of it. That is the one thing that helps me when the enemy is still in my house.....Not in Me... Great post but I could have never kept a pack around. The pack would have been the emergency - - - - Look - - there's one more pack to smoke!! Great advice Rusty. Rusty, I agree with you, but I didn't really do it that way. I think getting rid of everything would have required more effort than I was willing to put into it... I never got rid of any of my paraphenalia. I have bought cigaretts on several occasions throughout my quit to destroy. I feel a sense of power over the addiction when I destroy the very thing that kept me a prisoner for so long. I still have lighters... not to smoke with, but for other purposes... candles, fire works on the 4th of July, etc... In fact, I still keep a lighter in my purse at all times... not that I'm going to use it to smoke... it's more of a reminder of the life that I USED to have that I don't want to have anymore. I didn't have cigarettes on me when I first quit, and all of the times I bought them, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I wouldn't smoke. I agree that keeping cigarettes "just in case" is a pretty dumb... I can think of several occasions where if I'd had one, I most certainly would have smoked it! So I agree with you there... but I think that if I looked hard enough in my apartment, I could probably find an ash tray or two or three... now granted, I'd REALLY have to search for them, but I probably have some... and I know I have at least one lighter in my purse. You're right... it's probably not the best thing to do, but I just never got rid of mine... They're reminders to me of who I used to be... and who I don't ever want to be again. Crave the Quit! Rusty, I'm NOT disagreeing with you. I want to make that clear. I hope that nobody thinks that I'm saying that it's OK for anyone new to the quit to go out and buy cigarettes to "feel the power." I guess I should have mentioned that the first time I did it was January of this year... for those who don't know, I started this quit process in June of last year and have had 3 slips, so it had been a good 3 months since my last slip that I decided that I was strong enough to destroy cigarettes when I was really upset one night. So no, I'm NOT disagreeing with you in any way shape or form... I was merely reflecting on what you said. As for the ashtrays and lighters, I didn't get rid of the ashtrays when I first quit because I had a roommate who smoked. I DID get rid of all of my lighters (I gave them to my roommate) but have since gone and bought a lighter, but not to smoke with... as I said earlier, I bought it for candles and fire works and I still carry it around with me in my purse. I even occasionally lend it to a smoker who can't find a lighter, but I bought THAT in July of this year. Again, I'm NOT disagreeing with you... better safe than sorry definitely! I guess I was just reflecting on my own quit since I'd never really thought much about the subject. Definitely a good post and yours is most certainly advice worth following! I do NOT think it's a good idea to keep cigarettes around when you quit... as for the other things, well, maybe I'll go find those old ashtrays and get rid of them... I know they'll never be of any use to me... or then again, I'll keep them as antiques! Never know! Crave the Quit! I was talking to a workmate this morning. She quit about 5 weeks ago, she proudly showed me yesterday a Vanilla nicotine free sickar (cigar). I asked her why she has this, she said, i bought it last week, i probably wont smoke it. She says it is her security blanket. I said... it is of my opinion that you throw it away... i know she wont. I think she is having a little bit of a hard time of it at the moment. PrincessC :) x

I did a search on "junkie" thoughts and printed them out for her.... I left them on her desk and said.... if you need me i am here and i walked away. She has been smoking for over 40 years and this is her 4th quit, i want it to be her last. PrincessC :) x

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

17 years ago 0 816 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Rusty, you are so right having any cigaretts a round is just saying I am not really serious about this quit. I not only got rid of all cigs, lighters,& ashtrays but had my car totally detailed to get rid of all the smells, thank God I never smoked in my house or that could have been a real challege. Now the only time I smell cigs is on my husband (can't get rid of him) but working on getting him to quit.
