In Case of Emergency...

Pam, I really must disagree. Looking back through your 319 day quit, I know you're happy that you didn't smoke any of those cigarettes you bought. But how much effort would it take to put an ashtray, a lighter and a pack of smokes into the dumpster? And I'm sure you don't mean to say that it's okay for new quitters to go out and buy cigarettes to "feel the power." I stand by my statement -- holding onto cigarettes when you've just quit is an open invitation to go back to smoking. Whether you can find a lighter if you really looked for one is beside the point. Grace, just wanted to let you know that my husband smokes too...in the house. So same deal...ashtrays and packs to constantly remind me. However, my quit is strong -- I never smoked his brand anyway. It can be done...I hate the smell, but I love the man. A lot of new quitters keep their cigarettes while they quit. Just in case of emergency. I did, too. Everytime I quit, I kept at least a pack in case I...what? Lost my mind? Felt suicidal? Became a raving maniac and started breaking windows? In case of emergency, light up!!! WRONG! The surest way to lose your quit is to have cigarettes around you. The surest way to keep your quit is to be committed enough to get rid of them. Get rid of them and get rid of everything associated with them -- lighters, ashtrays, cigarette cases. People have posted that they've found packs in their cars or in their pockets -- go through your car and your pocket and get rid of them! One person shot his with a shotgun. Other people drown them or crush them. Whatever you do to get rid of them, make a commitment to your quit here and now and get rid of that JUNK. In case of emergency, POST HERE! Take a walk. Clean the bathroom. Vacuum your car. Don't smoke!
