vacation!!!!

18 years ago 0 51 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Well, I'm happy to say I'm still smoke free. I actually would recommend going on a vacation soon after starting a quit... I found the change of scenery and constant stimulation to distract me from thinking about smoking, and it made me realize I used to smoke just out of pure boredom. I even went to a jazz club, which of course was smoky, and wasn't even tempted. I'm finding that now that I'm back home the triggers and cravings are starting, nothing tooooooo bad yet but loving the fresh smell of my apartment.... thanks for all your support tim My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/24/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 16 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 253 Amount Saved: $127.2 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 9 Mins: 53 Seconds: 25

Hi all, need some advice here ---- backstory - I started my quit May 24th. It wasn't preplanned, I had my teeth whitened at the dentist and was so disgusted by the "before" picture and happy with the result that I decided to completely quit. anyway the first few days have been great, i'm so happy with my decision to quit and haven't had significant cravings --- in part because i was first and foremost a social smoker and I haven't been going out since I started the quit. so, next week i'm going on vacation to Mexico City and will definitely be nightclubbing it, and unfortunately I think the bars / clubs there allow smoking. I love to have some drinks and party and be social and go out all night long, and am convinced I can do it without smoking. I'm going to pace myself with the drinks, alternating with seltzer, and sticking with sweet fruit drinks (which I can't drink much of) and staying away from beer (which I can drink a lot of and reallllly associate with smoking), and if the temptation gets tooooooo great, I'll leave the bar. Luckily I will be with a friend who is strong-willed and has quit himself (about a year ago) and has never relapsed, so he will be extremely supportive. I have read all the advice about distraction techniques and will have my gum and toothpicks and all, but I wonder if anyone has been through a similar situation - on vacation and wanting to be free to have the best time - and what got them through it? What is the best mantra I can plant in my mind, that will stay there even when things may get a bit blurry? ... just imagine your mouth tasting like an ashtray the next morning after partying ... remember that? Ugh ... disgusting! LOL I think you have the right attitude. Stay positive and keep that determination level up. Enjoy your smoke-free vacation. I think the vacation thing is a great idea. It is also a way to reward yourself for making the decision to quit. Pretty good idea. Glad you had a good time & Welcome Back! Do non-smokers get bored? Yes they do. We never smoked out of boredom. That was a lie that our addiction wanted us to believe. We smoked because we were addicted to a drug. We were junkies. Sound to me like your idea of a vacation is a planned drunk. If that's the case, forget the quit - the booze can kill you a lot faster than a smoke. If your idea of a vacation is to get loaded, save the money and go to a local bar.

Its usually best to avoid that early in your quit...whatever you triggers are. But I think you can do it as long as you just don't smoke. Keep your coping mechs close and if all else fails leave before it gets bad. Don't let your guard down because that is when the nic will get ya! Hang in, I know you can do this! Have a blast on your trip My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/15/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 12 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 258 Amount Saved: $54 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 21 Mins: 59 Seconds: 43

Welcome back, Tim. Glad to hear your vacation was good. :) Most people smoke for reasons of boredom, or negative emotions such as anger, sadness, depression, etc. In fact, a lot of smokers are depressed and are self-medicating with the nicotine. Those are the reasons we enjoy smoking enough to repeat it until we are addicted. Then, ... well, ... we're hooked. The distraction of your vacation was a really good thing. Now your through the detox phase. From now on, craves will be memory triggered which is why you're finding challenges at home. Keep in mind that every time you complete, smoke-free, what previously was a smoking event, the association between the event and smoking is weakened. Eventually, that link will be broken and the association will become extinct. Sometimes this happens on the first occurance, sometimes it takes multiple occurances, but it will eventually die. Congtratulations on 16 smoke-free days, Tim. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 382 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,658 Amount Saved: $1451.6 Life Gained: Days: 71 Hrs: 9 Mins: 16 Seconds: 31
