this question is to anyone Do your cravings stop quicker if you do not use nic relplacement... I am off the patch after 10 days and now chewing gum (4) pieces a day?? If so I may just leave that off.. Hi Pam, This is the first time I have ever tried to quit smoking. I have not slipped, nor do I intend to. I have cravings, but they will not interfer with my quit as I am committed to never smoking again. I appreciate your concern, but I am not putting the patch back on. I I do not want nicotine in my body. I want it all out. Bring on the withdrawals ... bring on the nicotine lies ... I'm not ever going back ... not ever. I am almost at 30 days and still have withdrawals because I used NRT's which I have been off of for 2 days now. I still have mental thoughts as well. It is annoying. I'm hoping once the nicotine is totally out of my system that this will get better. Hey Oodle ... I don't know the answer to your question. But I am just sick of nicotine being in my system. I imagine since nicotine is the addictive agent that once it is out ... it would be better. I don't know ... but that is what I am betting on. I just can't handle it anymore. I want all this crap out of my body! No more smoking, no more pills, no more gum, no more patches ... no more ANYTHING THAT CONTAINS NICOTINE! Sorry for screaming ... *sigh* ... but, I feel so much better now. Hi Shawn, Congrats on your quit so far! I think that you need to understand that at particular times you will experience increased cravings. Sometimes you can justify these, ie identify a trigger, at other times you can't. That is life for you; have you never had a day when you felt down for no apparent reason? The important bit is that the general trend is a reduction in cravings as time goes by. This is a gradual process which is impossible to measure. All I can say is that I feel so much better now that in the first few weeks of my quit. And yes, I still get cravings, but nothing like the early days. And I trust the Elders on this site who tell me how much better they feel as 6 months, then a year passes. The other important bit is that as I grew into my quit, I found that it was no longer a case of one day at a time, of hanging on in hope. I actually started to enjoy my new self, the improvements in health and appearance, the taste of food, the increase in self-esteem. You are an ex-smoker now and your old life is behind you. The old addict in you is trying to reclaim its old territory; a place where he had no business to be in the first place. Your weekend was difficult, but it is in the past. shawn... i cannot recall the book or its author; however, i do recall reading in this book that post-withdrawl will come at or around days 30, 60, and 90...I have decided that I'll just have to live with the cravings for the rest of my life if I have to. hell, i deal with crazy people everyday at work, and i've got to respond to them...i don't have to respond to the crave at all...we were not born smokers, so it certainly isn't something we have to do...hand in there... oodle & breaking free, Quitting smoking is not easy, no matter which method you choose. It's very difficult and it takes a long time to get to the freedom. NRTs are supposed to help with the cravings, but they can't eliminate them all. The purpose of NRTs is to wean you off nicotine slowly and give you a chance to get used to your new smoke free life before going "cold turkey." I suggest waiting to get off of the NRTs and going the recommended amount of time on them. That way, you can learn to be a non-smoker without all the intense cravings of going cold turkey... especially if you both are having bad cravings now. If you think that you will have LESS cravings going cold turkey, think again! At least not in the beginning. The cravings are way worse in the beginning going cold turkey, but they supposedly end sooner because the nicotine is gone quicker. It's kinda like taking off a band-aid. Some people prefer to rip the thing off and get it over with (cold turkey) and others choose to take it off slowly and try to minimize the pain (NRT). Whatever you do, don't keep putting the band-aid on and ripping it off over and over and over again (smoking/slipping). Whatever keeps you from smoking is the right choice. Just don't smoke! Shawn, YES!!! There is definitely something dangerous about the 30 day mark. Around here, we call it the 30 day pit and it sucks!!!! Many many many quitters fall victim to the cravings around the 30 day mark and it's a very tough period to overcome. Every quit before this one, I gave in right around 30 days. So beware that it is a tough time period. The good news is that it doesn't last. It passes. I personally have a theory about this... it seems that major milestones are all very difficult times... 30 days, 100 days, 6 months was tough for me and there are others as well. I think that it's our bodies' way of telling us that we need rewards. When we smoked, we rewarded ourselves with cigarettes for virtually every single thing we accomplished. So, when we quit smoking, our brains are saying "it's time for a cigarette" but that's one reward we can't give ourselves anymore. So, it's really important that we reward ourselves with other things when we are quitting. If you haven't rewarded yourself in a while, I say that you're due a good reward. They don't have to be expensive... but they do have to be things that you will enjoy. Just remember, the 30 day pit doesn't last forever and you can and will get through this and will be so happy that you did! Crave the Quit!
