New Here . . . Help!

After reading through some of the posts on this site, I feel that I'm in the right "place" to find support and HELP! I have always felt that I could quit at anytime. No so. I realize this now. I've made a few half-hearted efforts which have not lasted a day! Smoking makes me feel horrible, so why do I continue to do it? My son nags me to quit, and I'm setting a terrible example for him (he's almost 17). I'm always "hiding" to smoke, so this must be a real problem!! I've set some goals for myself and would sincerely appreciate any words of encouragement. I KNOW I will suffer withdrawals on my quit date . . . I experienced these in the past after just a few hours of not smoking! Any advice is welcome advice. Best wishes to everyone, and I admire your efforts and your successes! Kendall

To everyone who has responded to me and offered their support . . . THANK YOU!!! I'm extremely motivated but am becoming quite nervous as my "quit day" approaches. It's great to know I have somewhere to turn. You can expect to see me up here more and more throughout the week. As several of you suggested, I have spoken to my teenaged son regarding my decision to quit. He is very happy that I have joined a support group and am on-the-road to a smoke-free existence. I'm sitting here thinking about how nicotine has controlled me for so very long. I hide to smoke. I don't smoke in the car with my son, but I'm constantly thinking about getting home to smoke. That's terrible, isn't it? I have trouble watching a movie the entire way through, because I want a cigarette. I am ruled by this addiction, and I've really had enough! Thanks again, Everyone! I have read all of your messages, and I appreciate your encouragement and words of wisdom. I feel very "at home" here. I hope to one day be able to offer my support and assistance to someone new. Hi Kendall, First, Welcome and you have come to a wonderful support group and have made the best decision for YOU. I am almost at 1 week and my 16 is my biggest cheerleader. I sat her down and spoke to her when I did this, and she even looks at my meter. She has gone through the moody days with me, and she will just walk away and say, your having a craving moment drink your water, do your crafts, I will be back in 30 minutes. Let your son know that you need his support, it does make it easier. First, make sure you do this for you, your health and for you to feel better. Then everything else will fall into place. -Go for Walks instead -Drink plenty of water -Pick up a hobby, crafts, reading etc -Excersie -Take a deep breath!!! You can do this, Each Day is a New Smoke Free Day Carmen My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 96 Amount Saved: $30 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 13 Mins: 1 Seconds: 47

Hi Kendall, I am new to this site also. Kendall, this is the site to be at and the wonderful people here will help you if you really want to quit! I am new also. The reason I'm writing is because you speak of your 17 year old. Chances are your 17 year old will smoke because you are his example. Do it for your child if not yourself. In helping with my withdraw I have been drinking a gallon of water a day. Because I am not on the patch or gum all nicotine should be out of my body in a few more days. Do a lot of reading and try to prepare yourself. I did read and prepared for a month before my quit. Then bam, I was so lucky to find this site!! I've ran into some rough spots and posted and have had someone help me within seconds. Honest to God. Good luck, babs My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/26/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 5 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 150 Amount Saved: $26.25 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 7 Seconds: 11

Kendall, Welcome the best support you can find! Quitting the nicotine is the hardest thing I've ever done (twice) and now on day one of the thrid try! I believe it is a matter of determination and telling yourself continuously that you can do it! I smoked more yesterday than I have in the last month, but I knew when I put the last one out, that it was the LAST ONE! It's also a combination (I believe) of the craving and also a habit...Like other people have said...do something different...take a walk...talk to your son...and before you know it the craving and habit will slowly go away. We're here for you... Vick

Hi Kendall - Welcome to SSC and to a smoke free life. Doing this for yourself and for your son will be the most important thing you can do for yourself. It really hit home to me when I just happened to ride by one of my 17 year old stepson's friends and there was my s-son smoking in the driveway. I just about died. I knew that I had to stop and to start being an example of a smoke free life. You can do this!
