Barely hanging in there!

Thank you all so much for responding! The messages were all so sweet and caring they almost made me cry as well. I was unable to get a doctor's appointment until May 25, so there is nothing I can do about that but wait it out. I had also called the American Cancer Society and had spoken with a very nice counsellor there who will give five counselling/support sessions on quitting smoking. We originally set a quit date of June 1, but then I decided I just could not take one more day of smoking, so here I am. I have the nicotine gum, but I thought you could not use that at the same time you are using a patch . . it would certainly be helpful for some of those extra (ha ha every five minute) cravings!! Hello: This is my third day of not smoking after being a heavy smoker for too many years. I am using the 21 mg patch, drinking lots of water, trying to walk outside whenever I get a horrid craving for a cigarette, hanging onto a plastic coffee stirrer stick like a cig, also have a long cinnamon stick to give my hands something to do. I keep finding myself bursting into tears, really uncontrollably crying. My daughter has been overseas travelling in Thailand, Cambodia and teaching in China for the past year and I have been a nervous wreck, counting the days until her safe return. Last evening we spoke (on AIM) and she told me she had decided to stay for another year, and I just fell apart. I cried and cried, BUT I did not smoke!! I have been reading all the postings on this board, obsessively, several times daily when it gets so hard - and I realize that smoking will not change anything - I am so grateful for this forum. Hi Sunshine: Thanks for asking. I am still hanging in there, yes, but yesterday was very rough, my toughest day ever, I felt like I was just one minute away from smoking the whole day -- very rough cravings. I snapped at my poor, patient husband for the stupidest reasons - not getting gas before we went out shopping, stopping at a busy gas station, oh I was awful!! I craved chocolate so and I hate chocolate and my dear husband then drove out again to buy me a lovely marble creme cake which then proceeded to taste like anchovies!!! Our son called from college and I told him we had quit smoking (again) and he was like "yeh, right" "I've heard that before", but he still called to wish me a Happy Mother's Day, and my husband cooked a lovely dinner. After satiating myself with too much marble creme cake the cigarette cravings finally went away, and this morning they seem to be fine. I am leaving for vacation for 8 days this evening, going to Arizona with a friend. I think it will be easier to not smoke since she is a non-smoker, quit several months ago, and we will be doing outdoor things like visiting the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Antelope Slip Canyons, and I always hated the "taste" of smoking outdoors. Thank you everyone for your support. hi I can relate to you missing your daughter, my son is in the air force and I havent seen him for quite a while and he's in for another 5 years. But, he's happy and doing well as Im sure your dauther is. She must really enjoy what she's doing for her to want to stay another year. I know you miss her but be happy for her, she's doing something she loves with her life. I'd give anything for my son to come home but that would be selfish. As far as your quit, your doing great!! the first week is tough. Im currently between quits but I can offer you my experience in what helped me with cravings.. I hate water so I drank the carbinated flavored water. TWIZZLERS like they were going out of style, orbit gum and cimmamon bottons. What about the nicotine gum? that might help with the bad cravings. I personally think it tastes like crap but it did help. Hang in there and keep posting and reading.. you're right, smoking wont make anything better and if you ask me it will make you feel awful. Starting over really sucks... Stick with your quit, you'll be glad you did marie~

Hi MiouMiou: It sure sounds like you miss your daughter. I am sorry she is not there to be with you. We're happy to be here for you. Wherever your daughter may be, I'm sure she is supportive of your decision to quit smoking. Tough things in life happen when you smoke and when you don't. When you stop smoking, you learn a new way to handle stress and bad feelings - smoking only gave you something to do while you FELT the same way. Smoking fixes nothing, it does not make you or the problem better. Have you checked in with your doctor about the side affects of the patch? Maybe that is the cause of some of your anguish. Try to do something that makes you happy even if it's not the right time. I have been to the ice cream store at 9 pm because I needed to treat myself. I have stayed on the treadmill longer just because I know it will make me feel better. You find what works best for you MiouMiou and be really gentle with yourself. You deserve some special treatment. Stay strong and remember we are here and we all know bad and good days. Hi Miou Miou, Hey look at you and those 8 days, hang in there girl, we are so proud of you. The longer you hang in there the better it is going to be. What brand of patch are you wearing? Being irritable is normal, especially crying so just keep on crying, you're going to wake up one morning and it will be gone. It sounds like that is already happening. Going away will be good, and with a non smoker will so much easier. Hope you have a wonderful vacation. I would love to see the Grand Canyon. What a wonderful husband you must have, wow, cooking dinner for you on Mother's Day. I' glad you son called to wish you a HAPPY Mother's Day, boy is he going to be suprised when you both become non smokers for a life. He will be so proud of you. Isn't it strang how different food is tasting for you, I never had that, my taste and smell have improved and everything tastes so good. I guess that is the reason I have gained 12 pounds.(ukh) I have got to start eating more healthy. Miou Miou, just take one step at a time, don't look at tomorrow or next week, just stay in the moment. You're going to do this...Just keep saying I CAN DO THIS!!!!AND YOU WILL. Let us know about your vacation when you get back.. Hi Miou Miou, I am so sorry to hear that you are having such horrid cravings while wearing the patch. I was a heavy smoker also and I used the patch. I hardly ever had a craving, I would get really nervous when it came time for a step down but nothing ever happened. The only cravings I had was after I went off the 7mg, the last patch I had about a week of cravings but nothing like HELL WEEK, I guess I was just lucky, or had a guarding angel. I know that you are under a lot of stress because of your daughter, but just try and turn it loose and leave her in God's hands. It's a wonderful place for her to be. I am so proud of you for not smoking last night. That took lots of courage. Be determined and having a good attitude is what will get you through. Did you tell your daughter you had quit smoking? If you did I know that she was thrilled. Crying is part of the quit, but it is also a great stress reliever. So cry all you want. What ever it takes to hold on. Did you read the post about Meditation an yoga, I believe this would help you. I try to do this at least once a day. Congratulations on those 3 huge days, stay close to the site and read and post. When you need help ask, just like you did tonight.
