At first- peanuts, macadamias, etc. Strong, salty flavors. Now they're just sitting there. I was never crazy for them before, but the first couple of weeks, I craved them. Icey cold beverages, esp water. You drink slowly, almost gargling- letting it hit the back of your throat. This, combined with having to hold your breath while doing it, has helped me a lot. I think Christine makes a good point regarding rehab. Unlike other addictions, we're supposed to just hop into regular routines with all the temptations and grin and bear it versus actual rehab (as with other addictions) and in many cases, rehab with isolation from those things. I think it's good to go into sort of an isolation in the beginning, which wasn't hard for a hermit like myself. Even now, I would avoid alcohol and bars or places where people are smoking because I'm still really needing to fight down the craves and engaging something which would reduce my inhibitions seems treacherous at best. I am wanting more and more powerful flavours. I come here and post very often, the writing helps to move through the crave. Lots of deep breathing. If I start to crave while I am out walking, either on my way somewhere or with the dog. I turn around and go in the opposite direction for a few moments. I get to reposition myself this way and take control. I purposefully stay away from public places where there is smoking allowed. Fortunately where I live these places are few far between and outside. I fastidiously clean my house. I drank a lot of water, took deep breaths, and used lolli-pops during a crave. The lolli-pops really helped for that whole mental thing needing to do something with the hand and mouth. Hey Pamala ! I used hard candy and baked crackers and ... red hots lemonheads jelly beans sunflower seeds baked cheese crackers popsicles cold water cranberry-grape juice cold ice tea hot ice tea coffee I like Melanie carried my "help" around in a bag with me everywhere I went. I stayed around the house for the first 2 weeks.. so I had as little to deal with as possible. Think of a positive future.. imagine it.. reimagine it.. if you can draw.. draw pictures of it.. write about it.. psych yourself up and live in the positiveness... Pamper yourself right now.. you are in withdrawal/rehab .. take it seriously and rest as needed, eat well(do not skip meals right now), know that your body is fighting this with you.. many changes right now.. 3 days and your physical part will be over.. This is a journey that will end in a new life for you.. accept all that comes.. it is part of the withdrawal.. Hang Tuff.. you can do this !! it's been one day, and 21 hrs since I had a cigarette... my biggest problem seems to be keeping my hands and mouth busy... I'm finding that chewing on Twizzlers (licorice) and breathing through a straw is helping my cravings... I cut the straw into thirds so it's closer to a 1/2 smoked "cigarette" size.. but that's mostly b/c the full size was actually annoying lol... just thought I'd pass along these two tidbits... I'd rather carry around a piece of a straw for the rest of my life than all the crap that goes along with cigarettes!

I'm also doing the gum and mints and water thing.. that's posted everywhere tho and I haven't seen anyone mention a straw lol... oh and I've also got one of those stress balls to play with... if anyone else has any great ideas I'd like to know too! I've actually taken a few days off work for this.. I can do that b/c I own my own business... I work with customers and I thought that now is NOT the time to talk to people I'm trying to impress LOL... all the things I seem to be doing seem to be working well.. only time I've really felt like I've had "symptoms" of withdrawl (other than hunger) was soon after I woke up the past couple of days... and then most of the day it was just the "habit" I was having a hard time with... another thing is that someone mentioned not skipping meals LMAO I'm someone who rarely eats more than once a day and now I'm eating 3 or 4 meals and I don't understand that at all LOL... hunger seems to be my only major "symptom" or whatever lol.. but I'd rather gain a little weight now and then worry about losing it later than the opposite... Hi MysticPamela, Welcome. There is another member on this site who used the straws to great effect as well. I'm a Mentos or Tic Tac girl myself. As for the hands, I cleaned like a madwoman the first 2 weeks. Even junk drawers and closets. All I can suggest is find something you enjoy, and maybe a few you don't and just keep doin' it. Whatever you need to do to pass the time. And before you know it those days add up as well as your pride and self-esteem.
