Jess, I remember you. I just got back from doing the same thing. I would go half a day no smokes and on the way home from work I would stop and get that pack and smoke the whole darn pack before I went to bed that night. It was a horrible vicious cycle. Butterfly Swimmer posted or bumped a post regarding the cycle once you start again at that time for me and it helped me allot. I can't remember the name of it now. Perhaps someone can find it for you. At any rate I can truly sympathise with you. I also know that you can break that cycle if you want to bad enough. Keep posting and keep trying to quit. I know it can stick if you keep trying. Hi Jess, It's great to see you here. I can tell by the fact that you're here posting that you want to quit again. From what I get from your posts, you're scared to try again because of fear of failing. Fear is an emotion that keeps us from doing lots of things in our lives. Fear can also be a good thing, it's the reason we don't touch a hot stove after the first burn. Fear is also what keeps me off rollercoasters even though so many people love them. But fear of failure is something that we must all overcome if we are to succeed and grow. Please don't let this stop you from picking a quit date and doing this. You must try not to go into this thinking you may fail. Positive thinking is what you need. I'm not sure how many days you had when you started to smoke again, but I'm thinking it was a few months? That was great!!! Look at all you had achieved, don't think of what you can't do, but what you had already done!! I hope this all makes sense, sometimes the words lose their coheisiveness as they travel from my brain to my fingers.lol. I'm hoping to see you post your quit meter soon. Welcome back Jess. I remember you. It takes a lot of courage to quit and once you have quit and then go back to smoking I think it is even harder. You know that taking the plunge is the hardest part. The anxiety will eat away at you if you allow it to. You know the addict and junkie thinking are in control right now. You have been around enough to know these things. Take control of your own life. It is yours. Get your coping tools in order, set your quit date and then just do it. One step at a time, five minutes at a time. Remember? You can do this Jess. Your desire not to smoke must outweigh your desire to smoke. The support is here for the asking. What you do with it is your choice. So there you go... The ball is in your court. [/quote] Jess, this concept of quitting getting MUCH harder after a slip or relapse is TOTALLY common!!!!! It's one of the biggest factors that keeps people from being able to quit again. I completely understand what you are going through, but please know that it IS possible to quit again after a slip or a relapse, but it is NOT easy! The ONLY way to stay quit is N.O.P.E. Jess, Quitting is a long process, not a quick one. A person's brain and body organs undergo gradual change, from detoxing right through to forgetting you ever smoked, if such a thing is possible. There is no easy way. Having a puff or two awakens the addiction process in a person all over again. It may be insidious, like feeling "Well I got through that without too much trouble. I'm doing all right." Junkie talk is easy and who has not justified having just one? A day later, the urge is back again to have another puff or two, or three or four. By week's end, the person has relapsed if they gave into those small urges. The brain will keep sending out calls for a fix, simple as that. Be aware that dealing with addiction requires total abstinence from the addictive substance. You have had a slip Jess, know that the urges will be there and junkie talk coupled with indecision will be easy. You need not give into it! Continue on your quit and call a halt to slipping. A slip can merely mean a setback in your learning curve, not a total disaster, depending on how you deal with it. Look upon it not as a failure, but as a warning on how easy it is to get right back into smoking again. Continue to stay positive and start each day of your quit with a positive reward!
