Goodness me...you are speaking my language. This is quit number five for me. I've returned EVERY time to the smokes because of these nasty withdrawal symptoms. All of them collectively...but most specifically, I turned extremely miserable at the 30 day mark and seemed to stay there. I quit once for 8 months and finally told my husband that I'd rather die from cancer, with a short life...then live forever as a MISERABLE, UNHAPPY non smoker. I convinced myself that smoking was the better option...BUT IT'S NOT. Think about it. It's just a little stick of paper with stuff in it...you light it up and blow it out. That's it. Not even a good buzz attached to it!!! You'll run everytime it calls you...above and beyond any other person or thing. Why? Because you are addicted to it. You think you like it...you think it's your friend...because you want to...you are an addict, after all. I was so afraid this quit. I wanted to pass 8 months and see how much longer I had to continue before the craziness went away. Turns out that I learned a great deal from this site. There is hope. The feeling of despair or unhappiness is a documented side affect that is related to something called "dopamine". I'm not going to reiterate the entire article or post (By Shevie)...but I highly recommend that you have a look. Your success is up to you...you must do whatever you can to get past this and return to a normal...healthy life. Many have done it before us...many will do it after us...Therefore, it IS a possibility. Good luck to you my friend. I sincerely relate.

Hi AlleyAnn! I'm not anywhere near as far along as you are. I'm sure looking forward to getting that far! Obviously,there isn't a lot I can say about your situation since I haven't actually gotten there yet. I did want to mention though that after reading your post, the first thing I noticed was your current stats. Holy Crap! *426* cigarettes you've not had to have! That's awesome! Well I've never made it that far, but my doctor once told me it takes about 3 months for the brain to take to a new habit, (or to get rid of an old one) I'm sure this is an arbitrary number but it's probably around 3 months (give or take a few days) before things start to get better. I haven't ever been able to quit that long but maybe some of the more senior members could confirm or deny this? Harrow is right; it does take about 3 months to change a habit mentally. I�m almost at a month and have not had any cravings the past few days, even under stress. I do mentally remind myself that I am a non-smoker, for reinforcement. I also enforce this by adding other healthy habits, like drinking water and adding quick walking breaks. I know I will never go back to smoking. So today was a typical Monday at work. For those of you who don't know im a Dental Assistant and have been for the last 15 years. What a profession to be in as a smoker huh?? lol Anyway, It was a stressful morning, really busy lots of emergency tooth aches ect. and all I could think about was. I can't wait till lunch time so I can go have a smoke. Thats the only thing that got me threw the last 2 hours before lunch. After I dismissed my last patient, I went and got my things and THEN it hits me. OMG I'M NOT A SMOKER ANYMORE. I was so sad that I was looking so forward to it. I sat in our lounge area for awhile, ate my lunch then called my hubby to tell him what had just happened. So since I was so sad, I decided to go to Wendy's and get myself a small frosty. It sure wasn't the satisfaction of the cigarette but it did help. I just would like to know when or if these thoughts and desires ever go away or is it something that is always going to be so fresh in my mind. shamrock alleyann- fellow shamrock, you and i quit about the same time. isn't this site wonderful in keeping us aware that we are normal with our thoughts and desires. oh how i want just a puff at times. (this is normal i say)but do i really want the nasty that goes along with it. (NO i say) I don't want to be a slave to the addiction any longer. i remind myself how much of a control it had over me. i keep some simple quotes with me at all times. this one i chose for today. just one of our current endeavors is to be smogfree. Alley... you are falling into the 30 day pit. Don't go there. It's not a nice place. It does get better and no you will not feel this way forever. You are at a point in your quit now when a lot of people decide to give up the fight and give in to the addiction. Protect your quit at all costs. Do not go to fairy tale land about smoking. It was killing you and there wasn't anything good about it. This is where you need to embrace your quit. Look at all the positive aspects of it, how far you have come and how much you have achieved. Is it reward time? 32 days is Awesome! Hang in there. You will make it. Deep breaths, one step at a time. You felt sad because your addicted self that's still hiding away in there got all excited for a minute, and when it wasn't satisfied, it became your little child self.
