Evidently it's do or die...

Thank you all for your support. I had been poking around a few internet "stop smoking" sites, and this one really seemed the friendliest. You folks have already made me feel welcomed and I am amazed by the help I've already gotten from the tools, and knowing I'm not alone in going through this. Mr. Ed: I have taken the bus back and forth from my home in south carolina to my parents place in tennessee a few times, and I know just how rough the cravings get when you are on a trip. I thought I was going to die when the late night bus from Knoxville to Charlotte didn't let us get off once to smoke on the six hour ride. I look forward to not having to dash off a bus or a plane to suck down a cigarette before dashing back on and hoping I make my connections. Zyban: Ohhh I will be. I was talking with a friend of mine about all of the insane things I have been going through, becasue after not living for a year, finding the courage to do so was an amazingly dificult task. My friend made a comment about how I never do anything the easy way, and was waiting to figure out how I would make this transition harder. I jokingly siad I would quit smoking. My friend got a good laugh, and so did I, becasue I was one of those smokers who just didn't want to quit. but here I am... a week later, and I know you will all be a tremendous help to me. Breaking Free: Thanks for the welcoming. You all really have made me feel like family. if there is one thing I've learned over the past year, it's that while friends may abandon you when you need them most, family will always be there for you. I have a really good feeling about this.

Hi, I'm BrownCoat (Yes, I am a fan of Firefly), I'm 25, I've only smoked for about 3 and a half years, but a year and a ahlf ago, my wife was raped at work, kidnapped, and almost killed. Suffice it to say, my stress level has been intense to say the least, and one of my primary coping mechanisms for stress has been to smoke. I recently went to the doctor's for a sinus infection, and discovered my blood pressure is staying in the neighborhood of 200 over 100. My doctor explained that as "60 year old alchoholic air traffic controllers with a four pack a day habit have lower blood pressure than you." While I apreciated his humor, the results of having a blood pressure that high are ... scary to say the least. And after a year and a half of stagnating, I finaly started to move forward with my life, to try and get past the trauma of my wife's rape. Now that I am living, I don't want to die. So, I plan on having my last cigarette 2 weeks from today, and as the nicotine is jacking up my BP, I will not be using any of the NRTs. Cold turkey or bust. Wish me luck.

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi Browncoat, Sorry to hear about your trauma. We all have ways of trying to cope with stress, in your case probably more stress than a lot of people will experience. One thing I figured out quite early in my quit is that smoking does not actually relieve stress at all; if anything it can CAUSE it. I don't particularly enjoy flying ( I hate take-off and landing, but I'm OK with the bit in the middle!) and I remember the time when smoking was first banned on aircraft. As the plane took off, I was quite nervous, but my agitation continued as the plane climbed and 'levelled out'. I realised that this was 'old Nic' at work, causing my stress levels to increase as I knew there was no chance for a cig for 3 hours. After landing, I lit up at the first opportunity. I then had to board a coach for a 90 minute journey, and all the agitation started again. Some years later, in my mid-forties, I realised that I had been repeating this pattern of behaviour for over 30 years. I decided that enough was enough. I was stupid enough to carry on in this way for so long. You are only 25, but with your health, you realise that to carry on smoking could take you to an early grave. I'm glad that you have taken this decision - stay with us on this site as you will get plenty of support here. All the best! Browncoat Remember the 3 Ps- POSITIVE attitude [very necessary] POST often [their is almost always someone here to post when you are in need of support] & Not One PUFF ever [It is hard to stop after one puff} Cuddles It's better to be a non-smoker with an occasional desire for a cig than a smoker with a constant desire to quit......
