A question for the VIP club

18 years ago 0 5009 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi you oldies! Apologies if you've been asked this one before - I'm now 3 months into my quit and although I find things relatively easy when I'm busy at work, it's more difficult for me during leisure time, UNLESS I keep very busy. In your opinion, does this pass with time? I'm happy to maintain this lifestyle as long as I know there'll come a time when I can be 'more relaxed about relaxing'. Or I am resigned to a 'hamster in a wheel' existence for the rest of my life? Concerned, Mr Ed :8o: My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 89 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,676 Amount Saved: 667.5 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 21 Mins: 1 Seconds: 19

Great question Ed. I am dealing with my first very warm, sunmy weekend here in SoCal and have been wondering the same thing. I like to spend an hour or so out back by the pool on weekends like this, and it feels so wierd to do so without a cigarette. I find it so hard to just relax, and think like I used to. Hang in there, keep the faith, that's what I keep telling myself :-). Mr. Ed. I'm not a VIP member yet, but I'm getting real close. After all the stuggling to remain smoke free, the craves, the emotions, the depression, the stress, and everything else I've been through in this quit, I can say yes it gets so much better. It took a long time to be comfortable in my quit and I'm not even really sure when that time came. It just kind of happened. Each day we are smoke free, we are growing into our new smoke free persona. It is a journey and the most beautiful part of the journey is what we experience and learn along the way. Is it worth it? Oh you bet it is. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 317 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,353 Amount Saved: $1109.5 Life Gained: Days: 27 Hrs: 23 Mins: 52 Seconds: 41

Mr Ed, Congrats on your great quit! The other veterans here have all stated about the same thing.. and I concur. Time is the big factor in your relative feelings as you move forward with your quit. These days I may get a fleeting "thought" about a smoke, but it's gone almost as soon as it gets here and I usually have a chuckle to myself that I even got it. Life is back to normal. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and before you know, you will have a tremendous distance between your new, smoke free life and your former life that you spent enslaved to a dried up piece of plant material. Best wishes. Be Strong. Be Smart. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi, Mr. Ed. I'm not quite to the VIP Club, but I've found that over the last couple of months my smoking thoughts have become more of an occasional realization that I'm not thinking of smoking. This change is so gradual that it's almost imperceptable. Like Katy said, you have to get through all the seasons. Smoking thoughts are caused by memory associations of events and smoking. You have to experience those events smoke-free at least once to break the association. Plus the medical research I've seen indicates it takes 12 - 18 months for the brain to physically recover from the damage nicotine did. 90 days is awesome, Mr. Ed. You're doing great. Patience and perseverance. It will come. Hi Mr. Ed, Yes this does pass. The seasons thing is very important. And at least one year for the major seasonal triggers to recede. Also, the inability to relax and enjoy not smoking has gone. I am an inpatient person, and transition times or down times were the last hard times to go. Finally, I can spend hours and even days of leisure without even thinking of a cigarette. Then bam, I will have an hour or a day when I say - where did THAT crave come from?? How come I just had the passing thought, "oh I wish I could have just one." I acknowledge it, and then move on. There is no misery, no desire to become a smoker again...but there is occasionally the desire to have just one cause it was so fun. Thankfully, I am now knowledgeable enough to recognize how much of an addict I am, so I sigh and go about my merry way. I know from the bottom of my soul I never want to go through withdrawal again. Have faith in those that have gone before you. This really does pass. Each day gets better. Total relaxation and enjoyment without even the tiniest thought of a cigarette will too be yours some day. YAY!!! Simple question, simple answer. Yes, there will come a time when you will be "more relaxed about relaxing" and in my opinion it may be sooner that you think. Good Luck d726
