DO we make this harder than it needs to be?

I have two cents to put in. I believe that motivation and positive thinking are the keys to succes. Selftalk is a good help too. If you think that quitting will be hard, it will be that way. I am trying to loose weight now for a couple of weeks and let me tell you this: I think that quitting smoking is easier than dieting. When I quit smoking, after the first day I could say: So, 1 day with a cigaret. You see results right away. Now with this diet, I need to wait at least one week and then see if I have lost some. The result of the week can be very dissappointing. So for me quitting is not as hard as a diet. I do not want to offend anyone, this is my opinion. Have a nice sunday everyone, Dutch :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 449 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,470 Amount Saved: 2,121.53 Life Gained: Days: 63 Hrs: 7 Mins: 44 Seconds: 16

Hmmmmmmmmm1 I have been positive, negative and somewhere in between through this quit! I started off SO well and to be honest it has become more difficult. From the morning I am going to say 'this is easy' 100 times a day and see if it helps! This SSC support group is a great place to be for information and advice. I have tried to stop smoking quite a few times over the years and always found it extremely difficult because of the feelings of emptiness and depression.I thought that I was different to other people because none of the articles I read mentioned these negative feelings, they concentrated more on the craving side of stopping smoking. Anyway it is good to know I am not alone with these feeling and encourages me to carry on with my battle against this awful addiction.Keep up the good work everyone.
First off, let me state I'll never say quitting is easy, because it's not, but sometimes I wonder if we make it harder for ourselves than it needs to be.
Nothing wrong with not believing that quitting is going to be the hardest thing you ever do. I didn't allow myself to believe and it helped me tremendously in this 'quit smoking' endeavor.
We (or at least I) tell ourselves it it extremely hard to quit, Some people make it out to be one of the hardest things you'll ever do. I might just be talking out of my you know what, but isn't this kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy?
In my opinion, if that is main thing being dwelled on, then yes, it is like a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If I believe quitting will be extremely hard, it will be.
Exactly.
This makes and already difficult task very hard. I don't want to belittle the efforts of anyone here, or anyone that has quit, if it was easy I would have suceeded on one of my numerous other quits,
Not if you believe it was so difficult. If that is what you believed, for all you know you were setting yourself up for failure.
but does anyone else think we could make it a little easier on ourselves if we could talk ourselves into believing it wasn't really that hard to quit?
Yes, that will most defiantly make a quit easier, combined with coping tools and knowledge/power. If you want to change your life, change your mind.
From the morning I am going to say 'this is easy' 100 times a day and see if it helps!
Combine that with motivational reading, reading all the success stories on quitting that you can, learning your triggers and facing them until you overcome them, adding new healthy habits to your life, learning new emotional coping skills and implementing them into your life. Believing in yourself makes the walk less difficult.
