Difficulty filling lungs with air

18 years ago 0 5 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
This post was started a while back but I need to tell my experience with this same issue after i stopped the first time a year ago. I had stopped 4 months prior and I started getting shortness of breath. I called my Dr and went in. They did a pulse O2 and it came out fine. My Dr told me it was because my lungs didn't know what to do with all the clean air they were so used to all the nicotene and crap from the last 16 years that my body was trying to adjust to the clean air. I would see my Dr for peace of mind if nothing else. I also did something stupid after this..I know I was just looking for an excuse but I told myself that this was bull I had quit smoking to feel better and now 4 months later I can't breath righ I might as well be smoking and I started smoking again. I know it was dumb and now I am paying the price because I have to go thru this all over again.

Posted By messages teppy 3/17/2006 I'm not sure of the correct forum for this question, but will post here. I've just joined here today after finding this site. I quit on 6-9-05 and have done fine other than about 9 lbs. weight gain. My biggest concern right now is the inability to take a full breath at times. Why would this start happening now after going on 10 months? Is this normal? Have you had a cold or sinus problem or anything lately ? If so, it could be your chest carrying a bit of gunk.. If not, I think I would make a trip to the doctor.. shortness of breath may be nothing.. but may be serious too. I have shortness of breath when I push myself too hard.. thinking that I am invincible.. which I am not(yet). My doctor told me to practice breathing from my stomach area.. and not just lung area.. deeper breathing. 10 months that is wonderful.. many congrats !! GoldenPaws & Teppy, Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Let the damaging effects smoking has had on you and your loved ones add additional resolve to your quits. Teppy, sometimes the best thing I've been able to do for patients and family in the same boat was to just listen. Danielle __________________________ The SSC Support Team

Max, We recommend you visit your MD to rule out anything medical, especially if the shortness of breath is experienced at rest or following any moderate physical activity. Keep us posted, Danielle ___________________________________ The SSC Support Team

Hi Teppy, Yes in the beginning months of a quit it is to be expected as your lungs are recovering and healing. But if the shortness of breath persists or worsens, you should consult your doctor. In that case you would want to rule out the presence of any illness. It would also give you a chance to consult your doctor about what kind of exercise regiment would be best suited for you. You may just be out of shape, put on a little too much weight... better be safe than sorry. By rest I mean while you're laying in bed, sitting on the couch... By moderate physical activity, I'm talking mostly about activities of daily living. Ex: taking a shower, changing positions, walking around the house... My fault, I should have clarified. Hope this helps, Danielle ________________________________ The SSC Support Team P.S. Max that's great!

GoldenPaws, Thanks for the post. I'm sorry that you had to start over again, but I know for a fact that your not the only one who's ever had to do this. How long has it been now? You'll make it. My cousin just found out she has lung cancer. We are a year apart and started smoking about the same time as teeenagers. I am 42 and she is 41. Its so sad, and I don't really know how to approach her now. I've heard others in the family whispering, "did she quit smoking"? I've even heard one person say that it really does not matter now if she quits or not. Thats a cold hard slap of reality, but for you its so different. you don't have lung cancer. Your reason to start back because you were not "feeling better and could not breath" is not a good one when you consider someone who's been diagnosed with lung cancer. Believe me, the shortness of breath goes away. It did for me anyway. I feel so good now being smoke free for going on 14 months now. I went on a class trip with my sons to class to Washington DC this past spring and it felt good to not have to worry about being the only parent there who needed to hurry off of the airplane and rush to an exit to get that smoke. Or, to have to worry about going through securtiy with a lighter in my pocket. Its such a freedom that I am so enjoying. Yes, at times when I'm at an adult party or something and people are all around me smoking, I find myself wanting a cigarette. But, it ALWAYS passes within a couple of minutes if I let it. Stay strong this time! Think of all of the reasons to quit and remind yourself of them everyday. For me my kids were the #1 reason. I want to see them both grow up and have very happy and independent lives. I feel like I am the only person on this earth who will make sure that happens. I have to be here.
