Itchy Scratchy Throat

18 years ago 0 506 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I quit coughing almost immediately after quitting; no little obnoxious wheeze after 1st day. People talk about coughing up a lot of junk, like spring house cleaning or something, but never happened to me. It's weird, because coughing was part of the smoking thing- you felt "good" about bringing up the mucous so then I could really enjoy the next cig. My lungs feel like they should cough up something just out of habit. It's a weird feeling. Hi, I have experienced the same thing - am kind of 50 days smokefree with a one day slip ten days ago - I find my throat is dry and scratchy, and and I occasionally have to clear it before I speak. This has come on in the last few days - and its taken this long to stop producing dark coloured mucous in first thing in the morning - during the rest of the day its clear, but I'm wondering when it will be clear at the START of the day!! I haven't experienced any sort of a cough either. I'm having a full pulmonary workover in two weeks anyway to get a baseline of my lung health for the future. Keep up the good work Riverdale Man. I'd love to swim but I'm a sook - I hate water. Running's the thing that does it for me and I am finding it easier since i gave away smoking (duh!!) Cheers from JR

Hi Riversdale Man, I am on day 27 and also have a dry sore throat for the past week and a half or so. I also have a small lump in my neck which makes it sore to move , i am presuming this is a gland. And due to the sore throat it is inflamed. The back of my nose feels congested also and i'm not coughing up a lot. I hear this is fairly common so i'll hang in there and hope it passes but if you are worried at all go and check with your doc or even pharmacist.. I know i will be if this doesn't improve! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Thanks As I was talking about this over lunch and I came to where Shevie is, with that it has to do with a mucous thing in my throat. AND I am sure that my system is not producing nearly as much mucous material to combat what I was putting in with the smoke. So I am dried out. What an analogy considering this wicked pictures of the wrinkles in on of the posts today. No I am not a prune. I would not float nearly so well. Lady I am almost always dizzy. Now, this is something that I first felt in a quit that I did in 2002. And I went to the ends of the earth to have it diagnosed to find that it might have been vertigo and might have been an atypical migrane headache. Soooooo I am very much aware of the dizzy feelings and my tendency to panic over them. I think that something catastrophic is happening. I think that it is very much my body getting used to amount of clear air that it is getting. I worried so much in that past quit over what this symptom was that I actually went back to smoking to comfort the panic. Lesson learned! And yes I do intend to keep swimming. Thanks again for reading and for responding. I don't think that I have ever felt so cared for at any time in my life. I am on day 25. I have been feeling great lately, really feeling like I am doing a good job, infact excellent job, with not smoking. I have put in place a (for me) vigorous physical workout routine, I swim between 5 and 6 hours per week. And I mean really swim there are coaches and other swimmers and sprints and all the stuff that is really challenging to me. Get to the point already! My throat feels congested and my chest feels raspy, I cough nothing up and any mucous that comes out of my nose is clear (first time that I can remember for this). My nose, throat and mouth really dry out overnight. During the day it feels like I breath so much better and yet I have this raspy, itchy scratchy feeling in my throat and in the top of my chest. I know that my breathing in my sleep is much much easier and I have no sleep apnia at this time. Any thoughts any suggestions? Does any one else feel this? Maybe I am pushing to hard and wanting to much to fast, that would be my usual pattern? Thanks Phillip :confuse: :quest: My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 25 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 508 Amount Saved: $187.5 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 3 Mins: 31 Seconds: 44

Not sure why, but I'm on day 20 and I haven't really been coughing at all. I had a dry throat for a week or so, but that's cleared up. I onlyh smoked for 6 years, maybe that's why, I'm on the patch, maybe that's why. I remember last time I tried to quit I was coughing up a lung on day 2, though. Sort of odd. Hope this stuff comes up sometime! Any ideas?

Hi Riverdale, I did have a sore scratchy throat for what seemed like about 45 days, a cough as well. It does go away eventually. Congratulations on 25 days you are doing great! I am on day 18. I have a seriously congested nose when I wake up in the morning. A good two or three tissues clears it up usually. I don't cough much. I used to feel embarassed when I did cough because people would take it as a sign that I started smoking again. I explained to them that it is my lungs cleaning myself. Be sure people you care about understand this. My throat is scratchy sometimes, and give that "clearing of the throat before I talk" cough a bunch during the day. It's itchy as well. I think the symptoms you're experiencing are completely normal. Not only normal, but GOOD. I wouldn't be affraid to go to your physician if you get worried.

Hi Quitter, some of us were talking about this the other day and quite a few of us never coughed up anything. Maybe this will be the case for you too. Congrats on your 20 day quit.
