RR needs to chill

18 years ago 0 51 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone. I feel like I have been doing really well quitting-wise but in other areas I feel like I am slipping. I have made myself so busy this month and I have gotten a lot accomplished, but because I have been so strong-willed about it I am freaking people out. My boyfriend thinks I am unhappy with him because I have been so intense and emotional and my friends say I am crabby and being too honest and difficult. I love all my friends and I totally love my boyfriend but I just can't hold back my emotions. I have very little restraint when someone pisses me off or slights me and I just rip their head off (even the general public-I accused someone who bumped into me of doing it on purpose when he obviously didn't). It's not cool, and it is not me. I used to be so laid back. Now, I can barely sit still long enough to watch a television show because I am in "go" mode and just have to be doing something productive. So weird. I know better than to ask when it is going to end (I know it is part of the quit and I need to deal)...but I am hoping someone has gone through a phase like this too and can help. Is anyone else going through this over-achiever, poopypant, ripping peoples heads off mode? Cause I need to chill!!! Hi Riss, we quit on the same day and I can relate to what you are saying. I am a fairly placid kinda person but have found myself being less tolerant than normal, not to the same extent as you but tetchy nevertheless. I think that we are just the same as we allways were deep down and this will pass in time. I know this is true as I have quit before so just hang in there, the 'old' Bubbles will be back before you know it. Rissaroo.. I can totally relate and have been wondering if this new.. quick to anger person is here to stay and how I should be dealing with it. I feel like I go much further when mad than I ever did before.. (except when I was pregnant.. I was quick to get mad then too) I also get much more emotional about things.. and then afterwards.. think..what was that ? I don't like these things.. they bother me.. Is this me.. the real me or something ? I have not been stressing out about quitting and I don't ever consider smoking.. no matter what.. I haven't had incidents of freaking out for a cigarette or anything like that.. why then do I have these emotional changes being so intense ? Now that you have brought it up.. it makes me wonder ... I don't understand this part of quitting.. the rest is so easy for me.. RissaRoo, This is TOTALLY normal! Most of us started smoking when we were children or teens and our "coping strategy" with dealing with ANY situation, be it stressful, joyous, chaotic, social... with a cigarette. Now that we don't smoke, we have to learn other ways to deal with our emotions... especially anger. As smokers, when a stressful situation would arise, we typically would go outside (getting away from the situation), b**** to other smokers (talk it out) and breathe in the smoke (take deep breaths repeatedly). All three of these things CAN be healthy without having to smoke to do it. You can STILL walk away from the situation for a while to calm down, talk to people about it and take deep breaths... just don't smoke. My suggestion is to come up with a list of things that you will do when you start to feel yourself getting angry. Some examples might be grab a piece of gum and chew on it, take a walk, call a friend, take deep breaths, etc... I suggest that you come up with between 5-10 things to do and start trying them out. If one doesn't work, scratch it off the list and try another one. By the time you've tried all of them (if they are all unsuccussful) then you've probably spent enough time trying doing this that you've had a chance to calm down, simply because you've taken the time to do this. It IS possible to deal with your stress in healthy ways other than smoking, but you just have to find out what works for you. Good luck! Crave the Quit! RissaRoo, Quitting smoking and Anger Management go together! Seriously, the temper and bitterness you are feeling are due to your quit. Once you have really become comfortable with your quit and with yourself as a non smoker, you will find you will regain your "friendlyness" once again. It can be a long process, but now that you know you are a bit edgy, you can focus on being less reactive to situations. This too shall pass. :) Best wishes. [b][color=Purple]Be Strong. Be Smart. Rissa, You are doing fantastic at 35 days! Show that off for awhile! Take some you time and know this will dwindle. Have you rewarded yourself? Have you tried relaxation techniques? Reading a book, stretching and yoga can relieve you of some of that anger. Keep Strong, Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
