Sleep Too much

14 years ago 0 910 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hiya Goofy!

Well I am glad my post helped in some way!

I used to do that too. I would tell myself 8-10 hours at most and no more. Then I would force myself to stay awake even when I was exhausted. I was so miserable! Like miserable all the time and Tired to boot!

Everyone told me: Rest when you are tired. But I had some preconceived idea of what should and should not be. But eventually they got through to me and I now sleep whenever I am tired. And I might sleep more then most but when I am awake I am much more blanced and happy. Plus, I noticed I am sleeping a bit less now then before, naturally. So I must be on the right track!  And on days where I sleep like 14-16 hours aday: I give myself a break and remind myself I am healing!!!

The only trick to this working though is to be honest with onself. It is important not to sleep as an escape or a hobby or a way not to be bored. If you are honest this works. ALWAYS sleep when tired,  NO sleeping as a hobby! (that last one you know about lol, you are the one who pointed it out to me! lol)

Anyway, that has been something that is trememdously helpful to me!

So if you are tired, go to bed hun. Your body is healing, your brain is healing, your heart and mind are healing they need sleep! Give it to them. and when you wake up from a nice long nap, rested. Pat yourself on the back for respecting yourself and giving yourself what you need!

Diva, thanks for that post.  As of today, I  give my permission to sleep when I feel like I need it and not try to adhere to some "normal" 8-10 hour per night schedule and nothing more type thing.  If I am tired, I can sleep.

Thanks again - it makes so much more sense and I can reward myself for sleeping when I need to and not trying to work so hard at staying awake!!!!!!

Hello Lance,

I have the particular distinction of being an insomniac and still managing to be a hypersomniac. Basically I have major trouble and issues going to sleep but once I sleep I can just stay in bed 18 hours! Also, sometimes I have no insomnia, the fatigue is so much I basically almost fall asleep on my feet! It sounds contradictory but it is what it is. All this to say, depression changes your sleep cycle!

At first I used to "hit myself over the head" make myself feel guilty for every hour I slept that I felt was "unreasonable". Eventually with enough people (among which my therapist) telling me to just sleep when I needed to and leave myself alone, that is what I did. And I am slowing feeling less exhausted. Sure I still have those "narcoleptic" days where I sleep in a coma like-state for  18 hours lol. But I have more good days. I have more days where I am actually up to see sunlight!

I realized my body is exhausted. So is my mind. It needs rest! Yours do too! So cut yourself some slack and sleep when you are tired.

Hang in there, it gets better.

Lance,

Try to visualize yourself a few weeks back when you felt good and felt in control. What were you doing at this time? What was your daily routine? What were your hobbies? Try to remember what worked for you then and take the necessary steps towards getting back on track.

Nothing for myself, havnt even worked out for the past week. Whats to do for yourself, thats free, when your back at not enjoying anything. I mostly just hang on the computer a lot lately. There is a lot to find there, dont watch TV, its boring. Plus when your nice 37" widescrenn you just bought is with the family and the 19" TV here has others shows on it, not much chance. I hope one day I will wake up, and this bad dream will be OVER.

That is hard.  You may feel like you are not in control of your life but you are doing so much to regain control.

You have quit smoking, you are taking action to address other issues and you will soon be working again.  That is a lot of regained control in such a short period of time. I know it doesn't feel like it though.  Keep trying to remind yourself how much you have accomplished.

What have you been doing lately for yourself?

Always here listening Lance.

Stay strong.

Members, do you get a scared feeling Lance is describing?  Please share.

Its hard to explain. I call it the "Fear Feeling" At certain times through out the day, I just feel "scared". Not sure if its not having a job or thoughts of my kids or what. Maybe for the first time in my adult life, im vulnerable, not in control of my life. Plus I feel alone too. Thats hard.

Lance,

I would try not to worry about over sleeping too much at this point.  You are going through a lot right now, be gentle on yourself.  It would be beneficial to have a regular sleep cycle, it could help with your mood but try not to feel guilty about it at this point.  You have so many other things going on.  When you do feel ready to begin creating a more regular sleep routine do so slowly.  Adjust one hour per week.

Can you explain what you mean by the scared thing?

Members, please share your thoughts on sleep.

Thats just it, once I do get to sleep. I want to stay that way. I really want to be up early, progressing and making things better. But for some reason I stay in bed and go back to sleep. Then I feel guilty when I do get up . Im feeling the scared thing again too. I dont know what causes that.
