Good weekend

PrincessC I have been reading your posts over the last 10 days and I have watched a steady and growing strength in your demeanor. Your posts responding to those in need of your support will continue to strenght your hand. I say that 12 days and you still get urges is defintely in line, and you are analyzing and responding to the situations correctly; otherwise you would have lost your quit by now. Keep up the good work! You are getting closer to getting rid of those craving. Stickin has 6 Months!

Thank you to those who responded and helped me to celebrate the milestone. After 6 months of quit, I have control over the beast. I do what I choose to do, and it does not include smoking at this juncture. Occasional urges come my way every two or three days but they are easily ingored. The serious urges are gone! What to expect along the way -------------------------------- 2 weeks, you are headed there, if committed you can make it. 3 months you feel pretty damm good. 5 months, it's almost heaven. 6 months you have the control and the power. Remember, don't well on the urges, use distractions to keep you out of harms way.

Eye opener

Princess I was able to have a few cocktails as long as I was wearing the patch. I only would drink at home not at the clubs. If urges got too bad, I would just take an aspirin and go to bed. When I awoke in the morning the urges were gone. Going to be bed early can help you fight those night time urges. After a couple of weeks of being quit, I would go outside my place of work and talk to my old smoking buddies as they were puffing on a cigarette. I told myself that this would help me build up my confidence to continue with the quit. Actually as I watched my old smoking buddies puffed away, I felt sorry for them and this made me stronger. Other ways that helped me. If I wanted a cig, I would just tell myself wait until the next urge and then when the next one came around, wait until the next urge. You are in day 9 and you are doing just fine. Keep it up. It does and will get easier. Keep yourself distracted; change your schedules by doing things at different times during the day. Dont dwell; keep yourself distracted.

Smoking Again

Cherie Let's look at this in a different light. You gave your body 16 full months of healing. That in it self made your quit very well worth while. Remember every day added to the quit column is a very positive thing! Have some fun and come back to joy us here. Regards Stickin to it

To anyone lurking and thinking of quitting....

Meece and Mama I smoked about a pack a day for some 40+ years. The technique I used to quit was to reduce my smoke intake to 4 per day over a two week period. I then set my quit date for two days later. During the two weeks that I was reducing, I was identifying my triggers, those situations that cause you to want to smoke: on the telephone, driving a car, watering the lawn, after dinner smoke, out with the others at work having a smoke Get your triggers identified and put a plan into place to fill the voids as others have suggested here. Hiking sewing, carrot and celery sticks and of course self talk. It is your fate to do this as it is our fate as well. stickin to it

Hi folks I happened across your web site and all you wonderful people who have the same goal as I "quiting and stickin to it". I smoked for 42 years since I was 12 and I am ashamed that I kept it up so long. I'm one of those who really enjoyed the pleasure of a cigarette. The years kept flying by and from time to time I thought about quiting but never did. In fact when I turned 50, I told myself that was going to be my quit day, but next thing you know that past and now I am 55. Well January 21, 2006, two weeks before my 55 birthday I quit and have stayed that way ever since. I am coming up on my 6 month anniversary and I glad I have you to share this with.

How do we get there from here?

Hello everyone and thank you for all of your kinds words. How can a person get there? Do not dwell on the smoking urges that come your way. They will pass in a few seconds or minutes. Think about other things, take a walk, chew on a carrot or celery stick, take 3 or 4 slow deep breaths, drink some water. I remember I used to love to smoke when driving a car. Replace that urge and grab a bottle of water to take with you. As I remember the first 5 to 7 days are the worst, two weeks gets easier. If you can, stay away from people who smoke for the first month. When you get the urge, tell it to go away, dont bother me. Take it hour by hour, day by day. The days will begin to turn into two days between urges, 3 day.. and so on. It can be done and you can do it. Just look at the list of people on this web page who have done it, all the money they have save, and all the longer they will live a healthier life for it.
