I am so afraid now at the thought of quitting... I just posted a message in this section right before I found your post.. (beautifully said by the way) I think I am pregnant... I have all the signs and symptoms but I wont know for sure until Saturday. What you said about courage not being an absence of fear, but being the judgement that something else is more important than the fear that I am feeling right now. well that sums up what I am going through right now. I know I want to quit, I know I have to quit. But even after going through a lot of the journey online and in my new workbook, I am still so damn afraid to quit. Why is smoking so important to me? I feel so selfish that I havent quit already, I should have just up and quit at the first signs of pregnancy... but after smoking almost 2 and a half packs a day for almost 20 years, its just not that easy.. You seem so knowledgeable .. do you have any advice for me? Meece1971

Meece: You are gaining a lot more than you would be losing. Don't be afraid to take great care of yourself!!! I guess I was more excited about quitting. I couldn't wait to go (I went for laser therapy) and I wanted to be a non-smoker SO BAD. That's the key - the attitude you have about not smoking and wanting to quit more than you want to smoke. You have the confidence to do this, it's just fear of the unknown right now. Five minutes at a time, you were not born smoking, you taught yourself how. Now it's time to teach yourself how to become a non smoker. You have our 100% support (and it's a lot, you will love this place!). Meece, welcome to our community and congrats on making a very wise decision. Quitting is not easy we all know that, and that is partly why we all (includung me) felt nervous ahead of our quit date. It is silly really because the way I see it there are a whole host of reasons why we should be more nervous about not quitting. What I found though is that when the day came that I had been fretting about, it was not as bad as I had thought it would be. In fact it was a relief when I actually started my quit as I had been planning it for a while. You have a few really good reasons to quit and it seems as though you are in the right frame of mind to do it. That is so important, an absolute commitment to beat this addiction and to grit your teeth and get through the bad times is crucial to success. Good luck, I say go for it and we will all be here to help you along the way. If you need any help or encouragement you know where to come. I'll add my support to the new quitters. Don't wait, do it now. I have never felt better than I do now and all the struggle at the beginning is worth it. Anythingworth doing is worth doing right, and quitting smoking is certainly worth doing right. What a great post! One of my favorite quotes is from Eleanor Roosevelt: You gain experience, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.. You must do the thing you think you cannot do. Fear is so powerful, and yet everyday we overcome it in so many ways. We have that strength -- we just have to believe that we do. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hello Meece, I probally smoked as much as You did, but mine lasted 40 years, Myself used the Zyban, In 2 weeks time, while taking the zyban, went from 30 cigerettes aday, down to 3 aday, I would light up a cigerette, take a couple drags from it, then take a pair of sissors and cut the fire off in the kitchen sink, WHY? to make those 3 cigerettes last all day, and it worked, But to me, getting down to 3 cigs aday, was like not smokeing, You just pick that ONE DAY to quit, and You stay with it, But no way could I have made it without this website, They were my lifeline and lifesaver all neatly wrapped into one, For I must have been in love with this site, O'Yeow, For everyday I would say to myself, Well how did I do that yesterday, that was easy, how about a rerun today, and I was off and running, Yes, I feel that fear of quitting, is just a state of mind, nothing more, Just stay close to this website Friend, And All of Us will pull You along like a Freight Train, So get on, and hang on, Soon have 3 years and 3 months smoke free, and I love my lifestyle now, Smokless In Oklahoma :)
