Prozac, Night Sweats & Anxiety Surges

Hello,

I have been on 10mg of prozac for about 5 1/2 weeks and have seen improvement with my anxiety. I am however, at times experiencing night sweats, and anxiety surges that are keeping me up at night. My doctor suggest that I take the meds as soon as I get up in the morning. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Will this pass? (I'm hoping....) It's nice to know that you are not alone...

Prozac, Night Sweats & Anxiety Surges

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for responding. I talked to my doctor, and she told me to exercise more throughout the day and take it as soon as I get up. Prozac gives me energy, so I find that if I take my dose later in the morning (around 9:30am) I find that it can give me the night sweats and anxiety. Also, I am trying to avoid eating anything sweet before bed, no chocolate, etc. I think that doesn't help either!

New Here and Have A Question About Meds

Dtaber,

I am on 10mg of prozac as well. I started very slowly on 5mg of the liquid form and titrated to 10mg. Ask your doctor and/or pharmacy. An SSRI will usually make you feel worse for a couple of weeks and then you will start to feel better, more balanced. For me, it makes me feel more myself. My doctor also prescribed attivan as well to get me through the first couple of weeks. Read the panic program it also helps to know that panic attacks can be uncomfortable, but they won't hurt you.

Hope that helps.

New symptoms? How To Combat Them?

Hi Deanna,

Thank you for sharing your story. Panic attacks are not fun, but remember that it won't hurt you. It seems as if you are going through a difficult time. I am on 10mg of prozac and my anxiety has gone away for the most part. Everyone is different (as my therapist and doctor has explained to me) so please don't compare my situation to yours. Theraputic doses for everyone is different. For me 10mg works just fine. Also, you need to give it at least 3 weeks before you start to see your symptoms slightly improve. Week after week, you should feel more like yourself. The trial period is at least 6 weeks to see any notible improvement in symptoms. Also, don't feel bad about taking the Ativan. It you need it to get through this period until the prozac kicks in,  then that is what you need.

I have cried too. Mostly because I wanted to feel "normal" too and mostly because I feel that I had no control. Now, I feel much better. And, I know you will too! Keep doing the program. Re-read the sections and continue to post. We are all here for you. When I first started posting I was suprised how many people we supportive and responsive.

This experience is different for everyone, but as my therapist explained it, once the medication kicks in you will be able to cope better with your panic attacks and work on the exposures. The process of "habituation" takes place and you start to feel better about things and as you feel better, an option is to taper off the medications. The process requires patience and be kind to yourself. It is not easy. But know that you are not alone!!!

Yesterday, for example, I took the subway and had no panic/anxiety symptoms. It was the first time I felt like that in years. Now, I am in the process of booking a plane ticket. It takes time. But, don't give up. We are here for you.

Hope that helps.

Prozac

Hi there,

I just read your post and I thought that I would tell you that I am on 10mg of prozac as well. I was also very reluctant intially. My suggestion is that you wait 6 weeks (if you feel that your symptoms are under control) and see how you feel. If you are doing great, then stay at ten. If you need more, the up the dose. It is different for everyone. Some people, like myself can only tolerate the lowest dose and it is effective. Others, need more to be effective. Don't get confused with "less is better" as our bodies are all different.

I hope this helps.

Great progress to share with you all!

Hello Everyone,

I thought that I would share this positive experience that I had yesterday working on the panic program. So, I decided that after 6 weeks of 10mg of prozac that it was time to start working on the program again. Yesterday, with my husband, I took the subway, and I had no symptoms of panic. Previously, I would wait, hestitate, it would build up in my mind, I would have to talk to myself and finally I would get on, still feeling anxious. Now, I feel that I was able to do this exposures without being so exhausted from dealing with the anxieity.  I was so proud of myslef! I took a long subway ride, went shoping and went back on the subway again and it was EASIER. I feel like myself! I hope to keep practicing and next, I hope to be taking a short plane ride.

I wanted to thank you all who have posted and encouraged me sinced I started the program!

Question about side effects of SSRI´s

Hello Everyone,

I was hoping someone would be able to post their experiences with SSRI's. To give you my background, I am on 10mg of Prozac for about six weeks now. Generally, I feel much better and I feel less anxious. I do however get woken up from restless and anxiety with sweats in the middle of the night at times and sometimes I feel that during the day as well. The feeling is milder in comparison to what I was feeling a couple of weeks ago, however it is still there and is uncomfortable. I going to talk to my doctor about this again, and I am wondering if anyone has had similar experiences. I was under the impression that most side effects subside over time. Can anyone else post what their experience has been?
