Newbie

Nick,

Thank you for sharing.  Often feeling dizzy can accompany panic but it is important that you discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

In the meantime, try taking 30 seconds between each shift in position.

For ex: Going from lying to sitting, take a 30 second pause before getting up to a standing position.

Also, panic can often be triggered by a stressful life event.  The end of a relationship can most be considered a stressful life event.  Stress management, exercise and relaxation techniques can help with your overall stress level and people with panic should try to incorporate these activities into their daily routines.

How to deal with stress

Members,
Feeling a little anxious? Stress and anxiety go hand and hand. Here are a few tips to help keep tension to a minimum.
  • Set priorities for yourself. Organize your time so that you do the things that are most important to you first. Don’t get too hung up on the smaller, less important things.
  • Recognize things that cause you the most stress. Afterward, look for ways to get around them. For example, if you find meeting with someone in person stressful, see if you can make a phone call instead.
  • Don't try to do everything yourself. Ask your friends and family members to help with some of your responsibilities.
  • Talk about your feelings with family and friends. Be sure you take time for social activities and exercise. You'll feel more relaxed, energized and not as stressed.

My Son

Lance,

First of all, this is not your fault.  You tried very hard to give your family a good life.  Working 80 hours a week would take a toll on anyone.  Often panic can surface when you are very stressed.  It sounds like the panic was a symptom of your very stressful lifestyle.

Your son just doesn't understand, but one day he will.  Mental Illness is hard for anyone to understand and for a son even harder. Be there for him, try to reach out to him and explain.  It may take some time but he will one day be able to listen.

It doesn't seem like it now but things will get better.  You were given this time to make yourself well.  You need some time to yourself to reassess your priorities and get healthy.  Look into the resources in your community, exercise, sleep, read do whatever it takes.

We will be here for you whenever you need us.

Work through the program.  We also have the depression centre which may help you www.depressioncentre.net.  Try to set small goals for yourself everyday. Even if it is to simply go for a 10 minute walk, that's good.

Stay Strong,

Negative Core Beliefs VII

Members,

Now that you’ve kept track of your negative core beliefs, try exploring your negative core beliefs about the future:

Questions about the Future
1. What would you like the future to look like?
2. What would you like to believe about the future?
3. How would you be acting differently if you believed that about the future?

Introduction

Welcome Braden!

Glad to have you.  It sounds like you are off to a very good start in combating your anxiety.  It's important for you to know that anxiety is manageable.

Have you started working through the program? It is full of great information and you can even take the tests to your counselor to look at.  Also, read and post as much as you like.  We are all in this together here.

I look forward to hearing more from you.

How do I get through this?

Hi Sploshie!

Welcome to the family.

Drinking can and does make panic worse.  It is best to avoid drinking.  Also, work your way through the program.  Even if your panic is not bothering you learning coping mechanisms, and being aware of your triggers will help you prevent panic attacks in the future.

Do you have a counsellor to talk to? They can help you move forward.  Often institutionalization is a last resort and it is often avoided.  It is best to try to manage your panic at home and live as normal of a life as possible.

Your mother and boyfriend may not understand panic and that is common.  Have patients with them and try to explain to them what panic is.  The more you understand panic the easier it will be for you to explain it to them.  So again, work your way through the program and learn as much as you can.

Panic is very manageable.  It is one of the most manageable mental health problems so know that you can get through this.

Stay strong.

Setback

Hi Don,

First of all feeling anxious when dating is normal and in a way, healthy.  We all want to make a good impression and this can be stressful.  But you are able to relax around other girls.  What about these girls or situations allows you to feel relaxed?  You should really examine your fears before going on a date.  What are they? How realistic are they and what would be the best and worst things to occur?

Another option is to be open about your panic.  You would be surprised by how understanding people can be when they actually know what is going on with you.  It doesn't make you any less attractive or interesting.  Many people are willing to be patient and if they cannot accept the panic then they may not be the right person for you anyways.

Members, what do you think about panic and dating? Experiences? Advice?

Positive Thinking

Members,

Positive thinking can be a very powerful tool to use in everyday life. Those who use positive thinking are more likely to anticipate happiness, joy and a successful outcome to every situation. Some say that whatever the mind expects, it finds.

Members, what are your thoughts on the powers of positive thinking?
