I've hesitated responding to this thread because I felt like I had made the decision to not ever return, so it was difficult to entertain the thought. But, after having persistent thoughts of smoking for two days, and reading through this thread, I realized that while it is as simple as "Just don't light up" (and I haven't), it is also a real and present danger, no matter how long one has smoke-free. So, I have been thinking about what it would be like if I returned to smoking, and I want to have it on record, for myself, if for nobody else:
I would be incredibly ashamed that I could not honor my word to myself, my family, and those who love me, that I was forever quit
I would begin coughing again - all the time; when I laugh, when I lie down at night, when I bodyboard, when I walk...forget running
I would not have much energy to do anything, so I would want to sleep all the time
I would probably not live to know my grandchildren
My children would be left without their only parent as they move through adulthood
I would never have the chance to truly use my life to its fullest potential because I would be knowingly cutting it short
I would be admitting that dieing is preferable to living, and making that decision despite any of my believed spiritual reasons not to
So, if that doesn't remind me what it would be like, please, someone else do so if you ever see me wavering...and I will gladly do the same for you
N.O.P.E.

I can't wait till time makes it all a dim memory
I am totally committed to this quit. No matter how many times in a day the urge comes up, it is just not an option. That doesn't mean that it isn't hard at times, because it is. I can go for days without a strong urge..have even gone a few weeks, but then suddenly it pops up again. Then I just hang on. Sometimes it seems like some of you old-timers have forgotten those feelings. I don't romanticize smoking, and I don't dwell on it. But this is a very ingrained habit that is trggered by a lot of things still. As I don't smoke in response to those triggers, they lessen....but there is a lot of time that needs to pass, I think, until the urges to do not resurface.

Audrey,
Sorry to hear about your mom.
My brother and I have gotten on and off the smoking merry go round many times. Sometimes I have tried quitting when he has, and vice versa. This time it is IT for me. I just keep him posted weekly about my progress and tell him how relatively easy it has been using Chantix. I can tell he is thinking about it. Patient but persistent ; )

Bear oh Bear!
I've been following your trip through quitland from the start, as I quit the day after you. Was just about to do the big congrats on your month when I got to your last post. I've been noticing in myself as well as in some others, that either the day of the anniversary, or the day after, often spells TROUBLE. My eighth day was the Worst day.
Not sure why this is, but have seen and experienced it a number of times. Maybe it has something to do with the association between celebrating and smoking?
So, what's your plan now? I hope it is to dust yourself off and get back up on that pony. You did make it thirty days, and I am sure you can make it another thirty...and more! I really really hope that you don't let nicotine get firmly entrenched in you again.
much aloha

Thanks, Danielle. I think I'm a bit more prepared this time..just caught me by surprise last time
That brings up another question...what's the difference between a slip and a relapse?

Thanks for clearing that up for me Danielle and Sunshine. It was a question I'd been wondering about, but felt stupid asking. So, Bear..you slipped...you didn't relapse. You have been a non-smoker for a month. We'll all cheer you on to another month : )
