Marcy -
Congratulations on your quit! You're almost through Day #3. For me, Day #3 was the hardest, worse than the first 2 days. It did start to feel more bearable (and I think I became more bearable to be around!) within another day or two. So, hang in there!

Thanks Mr Ed! The timing of coming across this post couldn't have been better. I was fighting through a bad wave of craving and doubts. My addiction started to mess with my thoughts.... So, I decided to read some posts for encouragement and what do I find....your post noting my 10 days. Thank you!!

Jaz -
Just checking in to see how you're doing on Day #1?
If you haven't already - make sure you've really gotten rid of all cigarettes, matches, lighters, ashtrays, etc. It's hard to do but well worth it.
Keep drinking water & chewing gum today!
And, don't listen to whichever shoulder is holding the devil - everytime that evil nicotine craving creature starts speaking picture yourself squashing that little devil (slap that shoulder!). We actually can learn to control our thoughts, just takes some practice.

Okay, I have to admit something, and I know that I'll probably get lectured for this, but...
When I read posts about people relapsing, I feel jealous...jealous that they got to smoke. I know this is counter-everything that I know rationally. I know that this is addictive thinking. I know how destructive this is, etc. But I feel the need to admit this experience as it keeps happening. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this?

Imallclear - I knew I'd hear something like this from you! You're right, I know. My thinking just gets really messed up sometimes. But, I'm working on it and fighting the fight!

I just received an email from a friend of mine who used to be a heavy smoker - she has been a nonsmoker for about 7 years now. She wrote to me about her motivation to quit - how she was tired of cigarettes ruling her life.
Anyway, one thing really struck a chord with me. She said that she used to hate visiting her in-laws because they are huge anti-smokers so she'd have to sneak smokes & always make sure she had perfume & gum, etc. She said that she dreaded spending time with her in-laws because they were so annoying (and I remember her complaining about this).
But, she now loves visiting & spending time with them and cherishes this relationship. She thinks that the annoyance she felt was really all about the smoking issue. Wow. To think that she would have spent the rest of her life missing out on this positive & wonderful relationship with her in-laws if she hadn't quit. Makes me wonder what treasures I'll find/re-discover in my new non-smoking life...

Angelcapp - For some reason, hearing about your little ritual with your son (counting days) really really touched me. How beautiful & moving. Talk about the ultimate "reward" for quitting!
And yes, I've also found all of this new time! It's amazing how much time we wasted smoking, going to buy smokes, looking for matches/lighters, washing our hands after smoking, etc. We now have so much new found time. Yet another reward!
Janie - I can totally relate to your people-avoidence thing. I used to be so self-conscious on the elevator in my apartment building every morning...I know I reeked and it is such a small space. I was ashamed to smell like cigarettes, especially before 8 a.m.!!! Anyway, I now proudly ride that elevator!
