Old Newbie

Greetings, I had my last puff last night at 9:00. My cardiologist gave me the 'long-face' yesterday morning, so I can't gamble with death any longer. I have smoked for nearly forty years, quit for up to a month three or four times, then for 10months in 2000.. (but I cheated by having a quad-bypass)I felt so bad for those ten months that I didn't want to smoke. My wife of 35 years is a smoker, but is very considerate, and does smoke outside. My previous downfall was the immediate availability of the smokes, and the belief that 'one puff won't hurt anything...' This time I have to quit, or die. I've never tried anything like this before. I did supplemental drugs once, but couldn't tell that it helped.. Sorry for the long-wind.. just finished eating and am having some lousy feelings right now. Three weeks, then BAMMO!!

I have been surprised by my quit this time in that I have not had any 'climbing the wall' episodes. After week 3, I felt that I could handle about any craving that came along... until yesterday. I was a bit wired all day long, couldn't sit still, looking for something, but not sure what it is. No craving for a cigarette, though I did think of it, something else... but I don't have a clue what. I have sampled all the food in the house, textured and painted the ceiling and walls of our guest bedroom, watched basketball, played with my model planes, played computer games, finally slept deeply last night. Today has been somewhat better, but I could chew the leg of the chair I'm sitting in right now... hmmm not a bad idea. Any sugesstions? ketsup, maybe, or even mustard?... yeah, mustard, the hot kind sounds good, but with maple? Three weeks, then BAMMO!!

Thanks for the response and the suggestions. The chair leg has been spared. I found, however, that the low-cal therapy did not do the trick this time so I whipped up a large bowl of jalapeno bean dip, with lots of cheese, and ate it with tortilla chips while watching the superbowl. That did the trick! (Hope this doesn't happen for another year, 'cause that combo won't be available.) ;) Regards, Bob Stavin' off the Cravin' My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 24 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 730 Amount Saved: $114 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 12 Mins: 40 Seconds: 36

Yikes! Husbsand has smokes

Mo, I am in the same situation. My wife still smokes, but keeps it away from me for the most part. The main problem that we face is that the smoke will stay in our spouses' clothes, hair, and on their breath. I must say that I have had more than a few times headed for where I knew the cigs were hiding, but could not, or would not give up all the torment and hard work I had put into this quit. Please resist the temptation. It just is not worth it. I think it may be a plus to quit with the spouse smoking because if you can resist with smokes so handy it is a snap to resist any other time. Just know that the smoke will not help you cope, will not help you relax, will not help you focus, and will not help you with anything except becoming a slave to an addiction. Don't wait until your doctor gives you the long face to finally quit. It just is not worth it. Hope this helps a little... You're not alone in this. Keep the Quit! WHEN DOES WITHDRAWL GET BETTER??????

Denisey, I'm about the same quit time as you and I know why you're asking. I don't think that the urge to smoke will ever go away totally, but the ability to dismiss the crave becomes easier with practice. That's what we are doing now, practicing how to deal with it for the rest of our lives.
