Thanks everyone for the support. I can't promise that I won't fall off the boat. I hear mixed opinions from co-workers and family about quitting cold-turkey. I know everyone here will probably recommend cold turkey but is it good to just Set a date and stop on that date? Set a date of a month, week, or day?

Man you guys rock!!!! This is already helping me. B, you are not being an idiot, sometimes the best way for me to deal with things is the "harsh" way. I will probably be on here alot whining so bare with me haha. As of right now I'm not going to set a date, Im going to consider my self a "Non Smoker" as of 10:00 PM last night. Thanks again for everyone's support!

Hello Everyone. My name is Ryan. I'm 28 years old and have been smoking since I was 16. I have never been serious about trying to quit this HORRIBLE habbit. I have a 4 year old son and a 1 year old son and just really feel that it is time to stop smoking. I usually smoke a pack and a half each day. My last cigarette was last night at 10:00 PM and I haven't had one since. This is almost the hardest thing I've ever done in my whole life. Does it really get easier???? I want to go out and have a cigarette soooooooo bad. Any advice? Thanks for any support!

Hi Ryan! First off - congratulations on your choice to quit. That's EXCELLENT! To me, it's just about the hardest part of the whole thing - the first "letting go". :) Anyways, I can tell you it's certainly gotten easier for me so far. Is it easy? Hayyyeeeellll no. However, the first week is what everyone around here calls 'Hell Week'. It's when a lot of the cravings are at thier worst. I can already tell you that for me, just in week 3, I really do find myself going LONG stretches without even thinking about a smoke. Honest! :) If you haven't already - I really do urge you to look on the left part of the screen and go through the tools available there. They really do help a lot of things, including understanding cravings and how to deal with them! Keep some gum handy, keep some straws handy - whatever. Be prepared for the cravings so it's easier to stand up to them. Stay CLOSE here. Seriously. Read a lot, post a lot, scream a lot. You WILL get through this... you ARE getting through it right now. I'm very, very happy for you that you've made the choice. Join us! Ryan - Take this for what it's worth. I am by NO means an expert or specialist or anything. I'm just some dude going through all this. However - that being said... STOP that thinking RIGHT NOW. The moment you let yourself go ahead and think "I can't promise I won't fall off" you ARE falling off. That's the nicotine addiction going 'Oh man this is too tough for you. You better realize you may fail at this'. Do people quit more than once? Sure they do. But to me, the second you start letting that thought of failure in - you are setting yourself up for it. Just look at your next statement: "I hear mixed opinions from co-workers and family about quitting cold-turkey." See what a great manipulator an addiction is? How sneaky nicotine is? It is getting YOU to say 'Oh heck, all these other people whose opinions I value have said it's too hard to do cold turkey - so it won't be so bad when I start smoking again. Heck - they said it was okay!' You see what I mean? I really don't mean to sound hard mate. Honestly. And hey - for all I know I'm way off base and being an idiot. But there is my opinion on that line of thought. Take it for what it's worth - but please do at least think about it. :) B My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 16 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 333 Amount Saved: $48 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 9 Mins: 13 Seconds: 30

Welcome aboard ;) Congrantz on making it thus far. My advice is to take it easy the first week or two, save up some of that energy. What you are experiencing now is only the first trial (which is the easiest one). Breaking an addiction is easy enough, breaking a habbit? Now that's another story. So take it easy, find yourself something healthy to eat, and keep yourself busy. I dont mean work-busy-busy, just busy enough to keep your mind of off smoking. Either read a book or even do some writing. The trials only gets harder if you sit around and wait. RKM - I think that you will find that many, many, many of us use stop smoking aids here...from patches to Wellbutrin, Effexor, hypnosis, laser treatment...nicotine gum...if it is out there then someone here has tried it. Cold Turkey is great if you can do it - but WHATEVER works for you to stop smoking is what we here are for! Me, I used the Wellbutrin - my doctor was more than willing for me to use any means I could use not to smoke and I'm sure that yours would as well. You can get many nicotine aids at the drug store without a prescription. Check it out. There is nothing wrong with using help! Once again welcome and I look forward to hearing from you.
