My husband quit 20 years ago and tormented me for years to stop smoking. Then, when I did, he made it clear he didn't think it would work and tried to convince me just to cut down to 5-6 cigarettes a day! I let him have it.
Now he's being really supportive, even when I slipped this week. He tells me and everyone how proud and happy he is that I've quit. (He is a bit worried I'm going to make him cut down on the evening martinis, however, since I now have no bad habits at all except pretzels. :))
It must be hard to live with a smoker and try to quit. Just keep your psychic distance from him if his smoking or attitude is hurting your quit....the marriage will survive, although you will outlive him.
