costly poisoning

Interesting and astounding to look back and see how we justified our habit despite the cost!

Keep up the great work folks!

Congratulations on your promotion Deb.  Madame Director has a nice ring to it.  You should be so proud of yourself.  Your hard work has payed off.  Now you can buy all the plants you want for your gardening needs.  lol.
I payed over 10 bucks a day because I smoked the brand name stuff for most of my smoking era.  After my last quit I switched to the no name at around $7.50.

Wow-- the cost!

Not only to our wallets, but to our bodies and our family's bodies.  Up to $12 a day or more for the poisoning.  I'm so glad you all made this decision..... NO MORE!

Enjoy your extra money, and your extra life.

I live in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC metro area, and I heard that DC was giving away NRT when the new tax went into effect, but I don't have any details on that.  I did see at the checkout line in my local grocery store, Marlboros were $6.99/pack BEFORE taxes, which would put them over $10/pack in VIRGINIA, the home of Phillip Morris!!
I am beyond mortified at what I was paying before -- if I were smoking now, I can't imagine how I'd begin to justify the cost!  In many ways, I gotta thank our legislators for making sure I never go back to smoking!!

Ron,
That is an excellent point!

Yes, the US is woefully behind in helping people quit. They are making it clear we should quit but how? When I was hopping around looking for a site / program to latch onto last year.. there were a few sites but nothing of this quality and I don't think any had moderators.  They should consider using some of that tax money to provide free or reduced cost NRTs too. Anything.

Rock.. that made me laugh! Yes,  it's great people are finding the SSC.  I think we saw more new members this week than at New Year?

Deb Congrats to you for the promotion. In this ecconomy that's something to be proud of.  On this increase in price
I agree with Brat that most of us when we were smokers didn't stop due to price increases.  I was mad when they went from $2.50 to $3.00. Then they shot up to $4.00 and when I quit they got to $5.50. And I was paying that for about 6 months.  The way I would justify it is I'd go to a gas station buy  $10 in gas (which is pretty tiny amount) and then buy two packs of cigs for $11.  I do this every two days. Yep It got very old hat quickly, but it was my way of getting my daily dose of nicotine and trying to stagger it out as gas expenses.  It's fun during tax time to see all this prior year activity on the visa and bank statements. Gas charges and more gas charges. But I guess I also wanted to chime in that it would be nice if they would take all these new tax increases and use it to help people get off cigarettes.  When I was looking out there for ways to quit I could not believe how few resouces there was out there.  If smokers are paying into $10 a pack smokes they should have at the very least more resources available to them to kick the habit. Of course SSC is great but the more the better.

cigs in Canada have been over 10 bucks for awhile now though you can still get cheap cigs (no Name) for about 7  bucks.  when I smoked I didnt really care how much they were, when you are addicted it doesn`t really matter as long as you have your fix.  Now that I have quit I can see how much I really spent and it shocks me.
