Scare Tactics

I have to say they did get me motivated!! Infact.. in the beginning of my quit I would deliberately do research on some pretty gruesome stuff in regards to smoking. It helped me stay focused and on the straight and narrow. If ever you are having a really hard time with craves just look at some people in pictures dying from smoking. They have a dead...scared look in their eyes. It freaks me out and gets rid of craves for days in a row. Very frightening! Since I have some problems caused by smoking now it just brings it all to the forefront for me. Scares me about the future even after the quit. Not much you can do about it now except take really good care of yourself and hope for the best. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Oh, they scared me. I would smoke and think about what I was doing to my lungs, my heart, my blood pressure. health factors are a big motivating factor for alot of people. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 30 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 720 Amount Saved: $150.00 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 4 Mins: 43 Seconds: 13

Hey Genevieve, I don;t think many people give up smoking because of these advertisements or reading about the disease and other problems they cause. What I do think though is someone that already quit as is thinking of taking just one smoke, they might be able to remind themselves of the health risks before hand. So for those that have quit I think it's worth looking into. I was amazed at some of the things that i thought were just normal that had to do with smoking. I thought 30 year old men were supposed to be tired and lazy all the time. I thought everyone huffed and puffed up the stairs One think to think is since you quit, all it takes is that one smoke to cause any one of the 1,000's of health problems smoking cause. I am shocked to find out what it does to your muscles and blood. It's not just lung cancer and heart disease here. it's everything in your body that it affects and remembering that might just keep you from lighting up again. It will for me. It's fear that kept us smoking so long. We were afraid to quit. Now if you are afraid to smoke, you just won't do it. More pain than pleasure and you just won't do it. I don't think they work one way or the other with me. They didn't scare me when I smoked because I ignored them and now I still ignore them because why would I look at them now? Did any of those adverts really, really make anyone give up? I don't think so. You give up when you are ready and stay that way for the same reason. It wasn't the dramatic gory images of rotten lungs etc that made me quit, it was the more day-to-day living with something which had all the drawbacks we discuss here regularly: smell, cost, breathing, inconvenience. social unacceptability. It's funny how those "scary" commercials and facts don't really don't get past our "guards" when we are smokers. But once we quit, the awful facts can really help to strengthen our resolve and keep us quit. As others here have said, "Knowledge is Power"!
