Always Startled When Falling Asleep

20 years ago 0 142 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I too had these tics, spasms and jerking. I would also feel quivers in my abdomen and in my face. My Fibromyalgia doc said I have Restless Leg Syndrome (which actually occurs in all the muscles) and gave me meds to help me sleep. I take them about 30 min before going to bed or sooner. I wait until I'm really drowsy and then lay down, I'm usually asleep within a few minutes. I would love to get a long night of DEEP, REM sleep. Although I can sleep for as long as 12 or more hours, I never feel fully rested. Della from SC

This is exactly how my first panic attacks started. I also had muscle tics and a horrible falling sensation. My doctor was sure I had epilepsy. It took years for a panic disorder diagnoses. Which is now considerably more under control with meds, but I still get that sensation sometimes when I lay down to sleep. Terrifying.

Hi, Yes, since my latest bout with anxiety started I have the feeling of an adrenaline rush just as I try to go to sleep. Then I wake up one or two hours later with a panic attack. It is hell. Good luck.

Yes, I often get the heart skipping beat sensation. I get it all. Right now I have left arm pain. Yet I know it cant be heart related. I have been recently thoroughly checked by a cardiologist (EKGs, Holters, etc. I am 29 and healthy. Just all of this anxiety is often too much for me sometimes. Now my arm is numb & tingly & i have a feeling of desensitization all over. and I have no meds with me at work. UGHHH

Yes!!! I was just up all night last night. Only I feel like my heart is skipping beats and I can't sleep. Does anyone else have that skipped beat sensation??

Hi Rita, I can definitly relate. I get that often, feels like your suddenly falling and the adrenaline rushes like a wave through your body and this continues everytime you just feel like your drifting off. It drives me crazy! I had it really bad at one point I would be up all night. Now I only get it occasionally, probably because I am so exhausted from the daily panic. Sometimes I just feel like i'm just going to jump out of my skin at every little thing. The funny part is that arn't you supposed to be totally relaxed when you sleep, sometimes I'll suddenly wake up and feel like a just drank 13 cups of coffee or something. I can't believe that there are so many people going through this!

Sarah, Self hypnosis really does not mean what it sounds like. It could be something as simple as closing your eyes for 2 minutes and thinking of good things or focusing your eyes on something on a wall or an object in a room. I have kept my eyes closed while on the stair climber for about 4-5 minutes before. It's amazing what you feel like when you open them. Music is also a great form of self hypnosis. Pink Floyd often works for me. After Hurricane Frances, I played the album, "Wish You Were Here," in my car for a couple days and it helped me return to some sort of normalcy. To me, slef hypnosis means being able to control your mind so panic or anxiety is not as severe. I learned this from my therapist and have had some success with it. I think I need to do it more now since I am astill rather stressed from the hurricanes and being of triavil. Take it easy, David

Hi David, No I haven't tried self-hypnosis, yet. I'm too chicken. I'm one of those highly sensitive people as well as being anxious. My fear is that I'll hypnotize myself so well I won't be able to get back. It's the same reason why meditation freaks me out. Sarah :)

Sarah, are you able to exercise frequently? Exercise has been a great friend to me throughout the years. There's also self hypnosis. I actually self hynotize myself while On the stair climber and it really relaxes. Don't worry, it's not dangerous. I hold onto the handles while climbing. David

I have some nights where I fall asleep fine, but awake an hour or so later and experience some anxiety that's very uncomfortable. This happened to me Friday into Saturday morning and it's trying to stay with me. As I said in previous posts, I am sure some has to do with the stress from the hurricanes we've been getting in Florida. I am sure as life begins to return to normal that I will improve. But it's so uncomfortable. Esecially when I have been doing so well this summer. David
