Fear of Choking

12 years ago 0 5 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi, that use to happen a lot to me when eating alone for some reason. I had a feeling that my problem was worrying that if I choked no one would be there to help me. That I was all alone. At first I would just avoid eating alone but after awhile it begin making me mad that I was feeling that way! Then I started just wrapping up my meal and taking it with me to eat later. Being able to put it away and then bring the food back out when the feeling had gone away really seemed to help. A couple of times it happened while eating with my fiance and I would tell him to acknowledge the feeling and let him know what was going on. Then I would cut each bite into very small pieces and tell myself there is NO way I can choke on that tiny piece. It seemed to work for me.
I did have that feeling come back the other day actually and I did this and haven't had it come back since then. Goodluck! I always felt very frustrated and confused by the feeling.

Megandg

Used to, and it lasted for years. I would get tunnel vision and want to pass out. Doesn't do it any more.

Hi Megandg,

I have heard other members on the forums discussing this fear. You might want to do a search to read the discussions.

This program will help you address this fear so be sure to stick with it. What do you think may have triggered the worsening of this fear?

Megandg,
Under great stress, I would throw up when I bolted my food.  This happened frequently, and I left that job eventually.

This memory helps me confirm the choice of working differently.

Ever since I was in middle school some years ago I have developed this fear of choking while I am eating at a public place. I become very tense and feel like everyone in the room is staring at me. It has gotten better since my middle school days, but I have found it becoming more apparent as of lately. Does anyone else get this fear?
