Assertion, Negotiation & Communicating

Anerol,
Companies often suggest public speaking as "development", and I've done those too, but again, there's this superficiality..but debating, to emulate wonderful statesmen like MLK make the craft seductive...I guess all is possible with time, and practise.

At least that's what guy did with the plumbing company when I commented on his company's diverse talents - digging up cement, using huge machines, replacing pipes, soldering...except for the big brown spot on our neighbour's lawn where it looks like someone buried a body...and the bald spot...I don't think the neighbour is happy...but I've got pics for the boss when I'm in a bad mood for justice(and the neighbour's sense of entitlement restored)

Anerol,
I took public speaking(toastmasters), and that helped.  What it did was take my comfort in writing, and allow me a safe platform to move to speaking.  I just felt toastmasters had too much pressure making enough people attend, and there is a superficiality to it.

I'd like to join a debating club, but they seem advanced.  It looks fun, and passions can be drawn, due to the colourful topics.

I also have a hard time being 'on time' during a conversation. I usually think of all these things I should have said later when I'm about to sleep or something.. not just for arguments but even for casual talk. There are moments when people don't get me too and moments when I don't get them. But I guess 'small talk' limits that with me with strangers so that I don't have to put myself in those situations. And it really takes a lot of time for someone to really get me.. so I'll only have patience for those who have patience for me sometimes. If there's really something I need to express in detail, I might just write a letter since I'm better at that then speaking. Or other times I might just give up and try to forget about it.

It's not that I can't respond, it's that it takes too much time.  Timing is important in assertion, since one has to become aware of our limits, for example.  I just take too much time to process.  I'm not saying that i wish to win every argument or any arguments, but I would like to be able to articulate my feelings in a timely manner.

The brain is not firing on all 4 cyclinders, but I can't(yet!) get an upgrade to a V6 OR V8.

I just end up being frustrated.  Today I have such a headache since I couldn't sleep, so I can barely tap out an answer.

Hi hug4u,

Expressing yourself is not easy.  It is a great skill to be articulate enough to get your points across.  But even very articulate people have trouble sometimes.  Communication is a two way street and it takes work for everyone involved to make sure everyone is being heard and getting their points across.  Davit is absolutely right, it takes practice!  So keep practicing and we will be here to support you.

What normally gets in the way when you have trouble getting your point across?

To quit trying is to step off the road of life. To live you have to try, every day even if you have a condition that makes it difficult. Use it or lose it.

Does anybody ever get frustrated expressing themselves in speech, outside this forum,?

In the future, I think we'll be speaking to each other, with avatars, as part of telemedicine. I hit a wall with people, and can't seem to get my point across, no matter what I call it...often it's hard here too, but at least there's an openness and integrity, for the most part, to change.

What is striking, is that we, on this site, have a "condition" or handicap, and we keep trying
