Space,

Welcome and know that we are here to help you.

The members could very well be moderators!  They have provided you with support, knowledge and advice!  Take the time to look around and begin the program.  It can assist you on progressing and helping you pinpoint areas that you need assistance in.

Do talk to your doctor and pharmacist regarding medication and use the support boards to ask questions.

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to mention that the drugs, wether a benzo or SSRI will help with your symtoms. Once your symptoms go away, you'll realize that it is really panic or anxiety.
My husband told me when I was reluctant to accept medication as a means to help, he asked if I had AIDS if I wouldn't take medication for it. Of course, I answered. So, he said, yours is a sickness just like any else. You need to take medication. So that's when I finally accepted that.

Red, sorry to hear about your horror story coming of SSRIs. I have never had a problem with mine, and have gone of within a two week period (when I found out I was pregnant). The way both types of medication work is different, and SSRIs work long term, and benzos are short term. 8 hours I believe... and SSRIs alter the chemical imbalance in the brain, benoz just relax..
But talk to your doctor Steven. In the end, we are all talking from our own experiences, and your doctor knows you best. He'll know the benefits that outweigh risks, and in the end, knows you best.

Hope this helps!

Hello Steven,

First off I want to say Welcome to the program and support group..
Next thing is about the Xanax..I would have to agree with David that you should give the Xanax a try. It will calm you down so that you can relax and think rationally. I would not be afraid of getting addicted to this medication right now. It takes a while to become addicted..I have Xanax that I can take if I need to and have never become addicted..I would not hesitate to take a tab of Xanax or a Valium if needed..The SSRI's thats another story for me, I won't touch them with a 10 foot pole. You can not just stop taking SSRI's you have to be weaned off of them slowly. I know this from personal experience. I went off paxil which is one of the many SSRI's out there cold turkey many years ago and it was horrible. The pharmacist told me that if I started to have seizures or a racing heart to get to the emergency room. The withdrawal side effects of coming off the SSRI was very very unplesant..Any way I guess what I am trying to say is don't worry about getting addicted to the Xanax. This may be the only time you need it and if you only take it when you really really need it you can't get addicted...I really think it can will help you right now and you wont't have to wait for weeks for it to start helping you like the SSRI's. The decision is ultimately yours to make and only you can make this decision.  Like David I am not trying to push on you I just think the Xanax might help you right now...Take Care....

Hello Steven

So you can accept it is just a panic attack but you keep looking elsewhere. Panic attacks are pretty bad and there are times we really would like it to be something else.
Before you can do much about them you have to accept that that is what they are. And the only way you are going to do that is by taking the Xanax and making it go away since you know it is a panic attack but your mind won't accept it. You won't become addicted, you might become dependent but that is different and it won't happen for a while.
The Program works but only if you accept you have this condition. Also if you keep tensing up and allowing yourself to have these chest pains and you are going to get some pretty sore muscles which will only contribute to the problem.
Xanax isn't the horror drug that its Sister Ativan is and even Ativan is okay up to a month.
Now of course if it doesn't get better with Xanax you could have some physical problem.
So you have time to accept this before your March 18 appointment.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not pushing drugs, in this case it is a tool and only a tool just to get you started.

So welcome to the site. It really does work.

Here for you.

Hi Steven,
I think you've come to the right place.
Mine started in the middle of the night when I was 21... I thought I was having a heart attack and called 911. Same thing - they recurred like crazy until the school nurse (I just started College that year) realized that it was Anxiety, got me in to see my doctor and put me on Celexa. This is an SSRI (unlike the Xanax, which works short term), it takes about 2-4 weeks to have their full effect, but it totally helped! Do you have a doctor you can see who could perscribe something other than a benzodiazepine? I'm the same way - my doc gave me Cloazepam, and I took a half one twice... I didn't want to get addicted.    With SSRI's I don't think you can get addicted.
My Celexa got me through the years (I'm 30 now) and only recently did I find this website, and am very excited about "curing" my disorder with this therapy.   There's a year long waiting list to get into an approved CBT program in my city, so I never thought it was an option.
Start with that. The medicine helps with the attacks. Once their gone, you can rationally start thinking about what's going on, and work through it. You're still young, you could nip it in the bud...

All the best,
Ocean

Hey, my name is Steven and I am 19 years old.

Before Wednesday last week, my anxiety was minimal to none and I had no pains or feelings of health problems until after I had a panic attack.

It all started on Wednesday, February 16th...
I was standing at a bus stop at my school waiting for my bus while I was talking to my mother on the phone. My mother was upset with me and she kept saying things that me upset and stressed. During the conversation suddenly my heart started to beat really fast. I begged her to stop stressing me out with the things that she was saying to me and then she got upset and hung up on me. After she hung up, my heart continued to pound very fast, and I felt disoriented and my chest started to hurt really bad. Later on during the attack I started to become even more anxious because of the chest pains and I was entierely convinced that my heart was damaged and I needed to see a doctor immediately. I went to the hospital that night, waiting 6 hours and during the wait, I keep experiencing several heart palpitations (beats skipping, beats speeding up for 2 seconds). When I was finally seen by a doctor, after an EKG and a Chest X-Ray, both of which came back normal, they came to the conclusion that nothing was damaged.

Thursday, the next day I continued to feel random pains all over my chest, some in the middle, some on my left, some on the right, some on my left arm, palpitations, and I was still convinced that there was a heart problem.

Friday, after my class, I got really nervous because my chest randomly started getting pressured and tight, and I felt like I couldn't breathe, this of course lead to another attack in which I felt more chest pain, and this caused me to take the bus to a different hospital. In this hospital, they came to the same conclusion as the first hospital, normal EKG, normal chest X-Ray and they just gave me a bit of Xanax.  However, I didn't believe the doctors. I continued to feel sharp chest pains even when I wasn't nervous.

That weekend, I was constantly on edge. Extremely stressed out, migranes/headaches, fatigue, chest pains, feeling like food was stuck in my chest, heartburn, digestive symptoms. I barely ate because whatever I ate gave me chest pains.

Then Monday morning I felt some more chest pains on my left side, and so I frantically convinced my mom to take me to the hospital again (same as the second one). They gave me another EKG which came back normal with slight premature heart beats, but nothing serious. This time they also did a blood test to search for any blood clots, and the doctor said the test came back 'textbook' normal. I told the doctor that I felt like food was stuck in my chest, so he gave me a prescription for Prilosec, thinking it was GERD.

Then Tuesday night, I got really anxious again, real bad heartburn, chest pains, throbbing headaches. Fell asleep at 10 PM, woke up at 1:50 AM, could not go to sleep... Took some Maalox, didnt feel any better. Avoided taking Xanax because I don't want to get addicted to them. Tried to go to sleep but couldnt so at 5AM I took a benedryl. I started feeling delirious and extremely weak due to the combination of various medicines, and lack of food and 6AM I convinced my mom to take me to the same hospital once again. EKGs came back normal again.

Now today is Thursday, as i'm typing this my chest is hurting randomly, it comes and goes, my eyes feel pressured and I have a bad headache, upset stomach and heartburn. This is all making me feel like I have some disease or heart problem. I don't have health insurance at the moment, and the only avaliable Cardiologist appointment available is March 18th. Until then I know I am going to be extremely on edge about suddenly having a heart attack or something, and I won't be able to sleep.

Please help me.
