Hi Shari and everyone interested in making soaps:  Well, I gotta get my 2 cents in too. lol  This is for children.

Awhile back I made soaps for my grandkids for the holidays.  I made just plain white soap into snowballs about 1 1/2 or 2 inches in diameter and put them into a little bucket (bought at the dollar store) with excelsior, and mounded them up to look like a little pyramid - you know, as you see in cartoons, ready for a snowball fight - then wrapped it in clear cellophane, attached with a ribbon and a couple of small pinecones.  They loved it!  The bucket had winter scenes on it which added to the theme.
Another kind, using clear glycerine soap, before pouring into molds, add a little plastic frog, or whatever theme you want to show.  They can't wait to get to the little frog or whatever is embedded.

Shari,
Thank you so, so much for your kind words of support. I know I am making progress but sometimes I get overwhelmed by how far I still want to go that it really helps to have others cheering along the way to remind me that these are important victories.
You guys have got me thinking with all this soap and candle making talk! I was trying to think of something fun to do this fall that could also double as holiday gifts and this may be something to look in to.....

The oil they use in soap is very volatile because it doesn't last. But I don't think I would want a real stinky soap. We did use scented oils but I don't remember what they were. My molds were made from 1" by 1/8" strips and they held 12 bars. they were greased with Vaseline which I put on with a little brush. They had no bottom and sat on wax paper is all.

Davit, you make me laugh.

Trees, I can usually find enough chamomile around, so I will buy it in an already made form -  good to know about the pink eye remedy.  I like your humor with the candle story.  Lavender is my favorite too and I use the essential oils too.  I am learning how to make them, homemade, with my herb book.  Just a warning, if you get (apparently, any soap kit), it has stinky oils to use in it.  I can only imagine showering with it, seeing people fleeing for their lives, and thinking it's the rejection dragon, but it's really the soap!  There's also a wellness tea that works wonders.  It has Echinacea, Vitamin C and Zinc and Eucalyptus.  I drank a large cup of that once a day for 3 days and was cured, of whatever it was I was ailing with.  I guess I should have added Gingko Baloba and I would have remembered - ha ha.  My sister in law is a seemstress.  She has a belly dancing store and she makes costumes for pro wrestlers - what a combo.  She gave me all her scrap material and I sewed tons of dog and cat beds and toys.  I don't have my machine anymore, maybe I'll have to write a letter to Santa this year.  You are so much fun to talk to, thanks for being my friend.

I have started trying only to use lead free or beeswax candles now that i know those are not toxic like other ones. i love beeswax candles and they burn a long time. i left one unattended by accident last week for several hours. oops. it was just a votive and was only half done once i realised it had been burning all day.
i had lit it to make a point of being mindful while it was lit that day, and yeah...then i forgot about it! ha ha so much for the mindfulness. although i wasn't specific with myself about being mindful of the candle and i got absorbed in sewing. so there you go...
I think we have some common interests to chat about! Normal perfume makes me nauseous so i use lots of essential oils like lavender which i adore the smell of. I grew some last year but didn't get any plants this spring and its late now. I love how much it smells when you rub your hands against the leaves. I got peppermint growing outside which is great for stomach nerves which is where I feel my anxiety. You didn't mention chamomile. I've used that for flu and pink eye infections but I don't know if thats an old wives tale or if it actually worked. it seemed to. I've never grown it from seed but I think that is how my grandmother grew it. I don't quite remember. Good luck with all the seed planting. What a great idea to do that for yourself.

Hi Loves Trees,

I have been concentrating on dragon slaying so much, I have not had time to welcome you - we are glad you are here!  I went to the craft stores today and bought books on soap making and candle making and I actually got kits for both, just to try.  So, far the soap kit is winning.  There are different kinds of candles you can make.  I like the beeswax sheets that you can roll and cut into shapes.  I have a single Christmas tree beeswax kit.  I was looking through the other candle kit and it has two double sized bricks of wax which I don't think I have a pot big enough to melt them in.  The little metal cups are nasty, they turn your fingers metallic gray and I have so many metal cuts on my fingers and hands from them, I'm trying the safer soap kit first :)  I'm sure there must be better quality utensils to use for candles, I just am beginning, so I will investigate and let you know what works best.  I ordered 12 seed packages of various herbs, to grow, dry and use for the soaps and candles.  I bought:  Province Blue Lavender, Sweet Violet, Peppermint, Spearmint, Ginger, St. John's Wort, Clary Sage, Lemon Balm, Heartsease Violet, Feverfew, Stevia, and Plantain.  Some can be used in tea and be used for medicinal purposes.  I bought a great herb book and chose the above from what I read.  The Plantain leaf is used as a topical medicine for blisters, cuts, insect bites, stings, and bleeding.  I wish I had some leaves today for my metal cuts and my dog's bee sting.  You put the leave on the injury and put gauze over it and tape.  Heartsease Violet is for hives.  You put the leave on the same way as for the Plantain.  If I'm under extreme duress, I will get one to six hives, so it will be interesting to try and see.  Feverfew is for migraine headaches and there was a recipe for a sandwich, in the book.  Stevia is like concentrated sugar for teas.  The Clary Sage will be my lesson in patience, because the first year, you can't use them, the second year is when they have fragrant flowers.  Thanks for listening.  I'm still going out every day trying to find new friends, so I don't get long winded with my online friends :)  I'm really glad you're here and we have a lot in common.  Your friend, Shari

Hi Shari,

I ran into a few unexpectedly before we had gotten to lunch hour today. I have calmed down and succesfully addressed them best I could. Now I'm crafting for a while to de-stress. You've got me thinking about trying out candle making. seems like it would be fun. i look forward to hearing about how that goes, and if it is fun. I"ve never tried it. right now i'm cutting up peices of fabric and asking the colours to go together harmoniously wihtout being boring. so far so good...

hope the rest of your day goes well.
