The "gag feeling"

It's called Chloraseptic Sore Throat Spray.  I recommend the cherry flavor.  I am from the United States (although my profile info. comes up as I'm from Canada).  I imagine Canada would also have this product.

Hi Teebs, 

During allergy season, sometimes the post nasal drip wakes me up in the middle of the night and I start choking from it.  Over the counter throat spray, that numbs the back of your throat, works really great.  It stops the gag reflex.  You can still feel the post nasal drip going down, but with out the the gag.  Since I've had it by my bed side.  I recover from the anxiety and panic of it, as soon as the gagging stops which is right away.  In just a few seconds.

Which means when you have the anxiety under control the gaging should be too. Glad to see you won't let it interfere.

YES, I definately have the "gag feeling". It almost always ends in throwing up. I think I work myself up and then I vomit. Its horrible and very embarassing. I haven't found a way to stop it, but to me its just a minor side effect. I'm so used to it already and I let it happen. I know its gross, but I'd rather vomit than continue gagging in front of people by trying to hold it back.
 
Don't know if this helps or not, but I just wanted to let you know that I feel that way too. I read somewhere that I should just let things happen and ride out my feelings. Its definately hard, but as far as gagging and vomitting, I just ride with it. Again, to me its just a side effect. My thoughts are what I need to work on since that is what triggers my anxiety, which leads to gagging and vomitting.

Some thing to consider is arthritis in the neck which forces the head forward and closes off the esophagus. Or arthritis in the tear ducts or saliva glands so you get a thick hard to swallow build up in the throat. Both will make you gag and the panic is then post instead of pre.  Just a thought because I get both.

When I'm experiencing it I'm able to swallow all right, but I definitely breathe shallowly.  The doctors I've talked to never think it's anything serious, but that doesn't make it any less uncomfortable! When I do give in and gag, it does feel like I could throw up (which is one of my greatest fears!), but I never do and it doesn't have nausea as part of it.
 
I'd definitely be interested to hear if others have experienced the same feeling. I know anxiety manifests itself different for everyone but it's definitely nice to know you're not the only one who has had to deal with something!

I get the same thing and it is one of the things I can't tell to go away. All I can do is use one of the relaxing teas, Mint, Camomile, Or if it is so bad I can't eat, then Lemon Balm.

One of the physical sensations I get during an anxiety attack is the feeling like I'm going to gag. Sometimes this feeling gets so severe that I do actually gag several times. Anxiety can lead what I call the "gag feeling", but other things that make me feel a similar sensation in my throat (such as post nasal drip from my allergies) can also lead to anxiety. This feeling makes me the most anxious when I'm not at home, because if I gag in front of others I think people will think I'm crazy or something is seriously wrong. It does still happen at home sometimes, though, which is when I sometimes I end up gagging and spitting into the sink until the feeling passes.
 
Has anyone else ever experienced something similar?
 
When I feel this way, I always wonder if it's better to fight the feeling (I know in general you should let yourself feel the anxiety rather than resist is so you realize it won't harm you) or give in to the feeling and gag (but often when I try this route I get more and more worked up!)....any suggestions?
