Empty Nest Syndrome & Finding a New Role or Purpose in Life - Ideas?

13 years ago 0 22 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Shari,

I am very much an animal lover and have had pets all my life. But although I know it is slightly biased I most definitely love dogs the most. They are almost human in behaviour but without all the bad points. They love you unconditionally and are forever loyal.  Ruby goes just about everywhere with me and has certainly helped me through some tough times.

I am no expert but do know my fair share about shepherds. They are one of the most loyal, obedient and intelligent dogs out there and make excellent companions. One thing in your favour straight away is your moving to the countryside, these dogs need lots of space and exercise. The country is perhaps their perfect environment. They learn very quickly both good and bad habits so you must be prepared to spend time with obedience training and socializing from puppy onwards. But time spent training them will be rewarded to you ten fold. Oh and Grooming! These dogs shed all year round, especially if they are long haired like mine, so be prepared.

Hope this information was useful for you Shari.

Jas,

I know this is off topic, but I love your dog!  I am thinking about getting one in the future when retired and moved to the country.  Instead of asking the pros and cons of the breed, maybe what type of owner is best suitable for an Alsatian?  A.K.A. German Shepherd for my U.S. friends :)

Take a look over session 15 for more guidance,

Thanks for sharing your success with us, Shari.

I am happy to say, "I am cured of empty nest syndrome!", thanks to the role transitions session and everyone's helpful posts.  This is the first time, in 2 years, that I have not cried and spiraled down into depression when my daughter left for college.  Yea!!!  There's hope!

Sunny

I am thinking of fencing a bit on this piece I have cleared for the deer and borrowing some sheep or a cow or two, just to have animals here, and they can go home in the winter. That is only because the grass looks ragged under the fence. I can't mow right up to it. The other option is to take the fence down to make mowing easier, and leave it for the deer. That is probably the best idea. I do miss having the animals though. I actually have two cows that never come home and truth be told I haven't seem them in two years. They stay at a friends and I should just give them to him. Usually when I visit the cows are out in the bush somewhere. Anyway gardening is getting to be enough for me now.

Davit:  Must have been difficult to let go of your animal friends.  I know it would be hard for me.  They're like family as they grow to trust and love us too.  It's nice that you have cats.  They all have their own little personality.
