Hi there,

I am new to the panic centre. I have been suffering from Generalized Anxiety for a while, I am finally taking some time to work on my self esteem and challenge my negative thinking. Does anyone have any advice? I am hoping that this program will guide me in the right direction. My therapist, suggested that this is a good place to start.

Thanks.

Matt42:  Congratulations on your driving and not backing down that busy left turn.  Phew, I remember those days but driving is o.k. now.

Ashley I feel I would be able to enjoy life more. Fear has a negative influence in my life. If I did not have this kind of fear I would be happier. I don't take advantage what life offers me. I would be free without it. When your free, life's stresses weigh less.

I have been having steady success with my driving. I am feeling more confident as I improve. I have only once this week avoided a busy left turn. The next day I stayed the course and made it. I remember how I felt when I did not face the fear. I let myself down and promised  myself I would not back down. I felt good making that turn. I remind myself to pace this. I do not want to go too fast and find myself taking too big a step. I intend to go through all the sessions and make this work.

Hi Matt:  Welcome!  When I felt the anxiety starting when I was driving, I used to sing anything and everything I could think of.  When you sing, you have to take deep breaths.  When you are anxious you tend to breath shallow and you might get tight chest muscles.  Singing was a distraction for me and I wouldn't feel the anxiety creeping in.  hope this suggestion can help you....

Hello Matt

Welcome. I had agoraphobia real bad and it included driving some times. I'm fine now. Do the program and don't push it. Take your time with it. It does take a while. You will know it is working when you start to get better without noticing it happen, and you will. As you develop relaxation techniques and coping skills you will get piece of mind and what ever is causing you this driving problem will just fade away. The bonus is that so will a lot of other little thing that you never noticed before that may be contributing. When or if it gets hard to do just remember that we are all going through some similar form. We are here for you if you need us. Post often, you will find that just talking helps a lot. Successes and failures, you need to write them both. If you notice something that may be a trigger mention it. Odds are pretty good that some one will have a way of dealing with it. Odds are pretty good to that if you find ways to cope that some one else will be able to use the information. Hope you stick with us, the program really does work.

Welcome Matt!

You have come to the right place.  A lot of the members here have trouble with highways.  Many have learned to overcome this.  They can help you to overcome this too.  Continuing to read the program will help too.  Be sure to set a schedule for yourself and stick with it.  Ask if you ever have any questions, we are here to support you.  Tell us how your exposure work goes; and how your doing, day to day.  We will help you every step of the way!

How do you think your life would be different if you didn't have this fear?

Hello Matt,
Nice to meet you. I have a lot of problems with driving too. Right now I have completely stopped driving... and for a while I avoided riding in cars, especially the freeway. But lately, I am attempting freeways again and I am on a good start. If possible, my advice would be not to avoid the driving if you are still able to, because it is harder to start again... (from my experience) but even though I have completely stopped, I am hopeful that I will start again one day... with much much patience.

Hello, this is my first posting. I have been living with panic attacks for close to 10 years. Little by little it grew and evolved. The focus of my anxiety now is driving. It began slowly and now I cannot drive on Major highways. Even as a passenger I feel the extreme fear. I have avoided both which is not easy when you have a family. My problems become their problems. I have now become concerned how on main roads I would become uneasy. This is why I have begun the program. It has to end. I feel it is time and I am ready to overcome my panic attacks. After reading a chapter and following the guide I have seen improvement in myself and this has given me confidence. I will move foreword from this problem. I believe it.        Matt42

Hello Anxietyinsomnia:  Welcome to the site.  Davit's right - post anywhere, we'll find ya!
I've just finished a bout of sleepless nights - exhausting when you don't get restorative sleep needed.  Yes, I felt a warm flush too.  My sleepless nights started just before my surgery last summer - had a lot of pain which kept me awake.  This was almost 6 months straight, then after the surgery I was still pretty anxious and it has taken me awhile to get back to sleeping again. Now, I do sleep fairly well.  Have you tried a cup of warm milk before bed?  You can put a drop of vanilla in it if you don't like the taste. Also I do muscle relaxation and breathing exercises and I find that calms me enough to fall asleep.  Sometimes I read a book for half an hour or so before bedtime, that slows me down too. hope these suggestions help.
