I really agree with progressive muscle relaxation.  Two things have really helped me in addition. The first is if possible, and you can get comfortable with it, go for a therapeutic full body massage by a certified therapist. I promise you won't regret it! You might be surprised at where stress & knotted muscles are buried. For me, I find it hard to totally release the tension in my back and shoulders. But a trained therapist can really work the kinks and stress out of the smallest muscle groups which can be tough (or impossible) to do yourself. I started to learn what being really relaxed felt like! A trained therapist can also give you stretching exercises to do at home each day for the parts of your body that carry a lot of tension. For me, as each week goes by, my body seems to become more flexible, less tense, and the "tense & hold"  progressive muscle relaxation gets even better results. I can even touch my toes again (ha,ha). I sleep better too! Have a great day, Don

If you do the exercises we talked about earlier this week, you’re going to be feeling more relaxed. However, what you want to do at this point is to scan your body for places that might still be tense. So, starting at your toes, work your way up your body. If you feel tension somewhere, for example, in your neck and shoulders, tense and relax that area one or two more times.

That’s all there is to progressive muscle relaxation!

If you had trouble the first time, try it again. It sometimes takes a while for people to get comfortable with Progressive Muscle Relaxation. Some people like to do it lying down while others enjoy listening to relaxing music. Other people get a more complete relaxation experience by going straight from progressive muscle relaxation into five minutes of box breathing. Whatever works for you is fine.

Now would be a great time to take a short break. Try the above exercise before continuing. Imagine that all of the muscles in your body are relaxed. Try some deep breathing.
