Hi Don,

The great thing about hypnosis (and you may want to consider seeing a hypnotherapist so that they can customize the CD to your needs) is that it goes deep into the subconscious to get rid of bad associations and replace them with positive ones. And just forcing your mind to relax with meditation and soothing music at least once a day helps your over all mental health and makes it easier to cope with life in general, which is key to getting rid of panic in the long run. 

But also I think what makes a panic attack scarier during the night as opposed to the day (I've experienced both) is that you are asleep and not fully aware of what is going on. When I am woken up from one, the most beneficial thought I've had is "Oh, this is just a panic attack." This seems to calm me down a lot quicker. It helps me regain control. The more I learn that the symptoms of a panic attack are not harmful, the less panic attacks I have.

Hi Rachelle,
I was just wondering if your hypnosis CD's, meditation, guided imagery, and soothing music you suggest have helped with your panic attacks that wake you in the middle of the night?  I'm not sure how to sooth the subconscious triggers you refer to and I also experience while sleeping on occasion.  I can't really control my thoughts/dreams while I am sleeping, can I?? I don't dream that much anyhow....Thanks, Don

I know what you are going through. I've had panic attacks that actually wake me up in the middle of the night. I've heard this is quite common, actually. A person can have a panic attack from a subconscious trigger, such as a thought or fear. Perhaps something is bothering you and you aren't quite aware of what it is or not wanting to deal with it. In my case it was the failing health of my grandparents. Another subconscious trigger could simply be a physical symptom. Say you are lying there and suddenly you feel your heart beating faster (this is normal depending on if you are thinking about something that stresses you), then you panic because a racing heart is one of the symptoms of a panic attack and you don't want to panic. 

It sounds like you have a lot of stress in your life and don't get a break from your own thoughts. What has worked for me is doing hypnosis CD's that get you to relax and not have thoughts for a while. I also suggest meditation, guided imagery and listening to soothing music. 

I would keep in mind that planning a wedding and getting married is a very stressful time for anyone. Don't be hard on yourself that it is giving you anxiety.

If you don't want to resort to medication, I would give the program a try first and work on your breathing and relaxation techniques. Speak with your doctor as well, as they might have some suggestions that are unrelated to medication.

No I haven't told my doctor yet. It's not that I'm scared of doctor's I just would like to do this without medication.. I don't think I would work well with medication.. but do you think sleeping pills would help? I mean it only happens at night?

I just feel scared about the world around me. There are so many problems in the world today. I've been getting more nervous around confrontation. It's almost like I'm exhausted of trying to be the shoulder.. and hearing all that's wrong in the world, or people's problems in general. I hate playing a hostess and I think I do that to everyone... I'm always trying to make good impressions and I think that may have some part of it. I'm trying to resemble a normal, caring person... and it's a little draining. i will definatly read those techniques before I go to bed tonight.

Why do you think you feel that way now?  I have an idea of why I feel that way: After a long day I feel too tired to even look at anyone I just don't have the energy.  The though of having to have a conversation with someone seems scarey....

Try not to start avoiding situations this can actually make the panic worse and isolate you.  It is important to try to lead as normal a life as possible.
 
Have you talked to a doctor about your panic and your sleep difficulties?  He/she may be able to refer you to someone or offer you advice. 
 
I would also suggest working in meditation and relaxation techniques into your daily schedule especially before bed.  look at the auxiliary section 10.  It will teach you the box breathing technique and progressive muscle relaxation technique.

well my shifts used to be in the morning and i was having these attacks and I wouldn't be able to sleep so i kept calling in sick to work just so i can recover from the sleep i lost. Then I thought well what if i just started working later in the afternoons so i switched my shift and I'm still getting these attacks.. It's very strange. I'm usually not nervous about anything or being around lots of people, but now i find that i just don't even want to leave my house because I just don't want to see alot of people.. not certain people but just people in general
