Fear of dental/medical procedures

Today I started the program and feel like I have taken a step in the right direction.  I have not found the "exposure exercises" that you talked about but have finished the first section.  I also phoned my siblings to see if they have the same fear of the dentist and doctor and found that they both have fear of the dentist but not so much the doctor.  However they both seem to be able to control their fears and go to the dentist.  I am hoping that I can work through some of these negative thoughts before my appointment on October 27,08 that I have already thought about cancelling by telling myself that I need more time to work out my issues, but my husband says that is just my fear talking.

jon,   Try using the exposure exercises to begin to challenge those negative thoughts.  You can do dry runs and even start small.  Do tell your dentist about your worries and yes they can be very sensitive to your needs.

This is the first time that I actually feel like someone who says they understand actually do understand.  I have been having such a hard time lately in anticipation of my dentist appointment (not until Oct 27/08) that I feel like my ability to cope with it is slowly slipping away.  I read with a slight sense of disbelief that you went to the dentist a got through it without freaking out in the chair.  Do you have feelings of panic leading up to the appointment that are draining emotionally for you?  How did you get to the point of going?

HI Jonlee, I can relate, I had to go and get a crown in my tooth, and you can ask everyone here how nervous I was.  I was forced to go because of dental pain and I told my dentist how nervous I was, and she was very understanding, and every two mins she kept saying are you ok, are you ok, we'll stop for a second and so forth, and it was great, I had to go for 3 appointments and I got thru it, my friend took me and waited in the waiting room and that was a big help too.
I understand completely..the last time I had so much dental pain I ignored going because I was so anxious and had to have my tooth pulled out..so now I have a big gap on the side..grrr.
If you tell your dentist how anxious you are, you'll realise that there are so many people with the fear of the dentist and you're not the only one!!! hope this helps.

I am looking for someone who understands my fear of dentists and doctors. I am feeling so trapped right now by upcoming appointments and feel like no one around me understands. I have been to a therapist but it seems to have been no help. I am feeling frustrated and so afraid. Does anyone understand? Does anyone know how I can get through the wait time until my dentist appointment without all these panic attacks - and how can I get through the appoitment.  Right now it seems impossible.
