Riding in a car as a passenger

15 years ago 0 341 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Im a nervous passenger too, since i'm not my new meds tho i have tried to relax more.  I"m not good in a lot of traffic, I prefer to be moving, and I dont like to be on main roads, I could take back roads if it takes longer I dont care, I just dont like to be around lots of traffic. When we go to my inlaws its a 2 hour drive, and I try to listen to music..if i'm with my hubby and his brother I sit in the back and listen to audiobooks, they are a wonderful distraction.  I"m actually better in the backseat than the front, i'm not sure why.  !

CD and Birdie,   Thank you for sharing your experiences! It can be very difficult to overcome certain anxieties related to driving, especially after personal fear-provoking events.   CD, travelling can be challenging but by slowly exposing yourself you can increase your comfort level in this situation. Birdie also brought up a very good point about having a "safe person" to ride with. Have you considered someone like this that you would be able to trust while they are driving?   Have any other members experienced fear when riding in a car?     Sarah, Health Educator

Oh man this is a tough one for me to do exposure with . My husband or me do not drive . I really dont travelling at all . Scarred as a kid , my dad used to drive fast and got off on scaring the hell out of us .

Feel safer with my mum but she lives so far away and works so dont see her very much . Also was hit and injured my neck aged 15 by a drink driver . Came so close a few times to some nasty incidents , think we were definatley being looked over by someone above those days . For example on a way to religious convention , my father hired a minibus to take ours and another family to it . I sat at the back with a friend , as you like to when your young lol . It was a right cronky old minibus as well . We were tanking it down the motorway when boof , the back doors fly open and we tipped backwards  . Dad pulled over and it turned out our seat only had ONE bolt holding our seat on !!!! *shivers *

I will travel but am very very anxious .

My biggest fear is riding in a car, as a passenger, with someone who doesn't know about my anxiety!  Just riding with my "safe person" doesn't bother me.  I've really been avoiding this and don't want to do exposure work but I know I should!!!!!!!!   I've made great accomplishments in other areas but this one.  And I know willingness has to be a part of this!!!!!  I've been pushing myself in other areas so I guess I'm still avoiding something else......Shame on me....

Members,

Do you struggle with anxiety? Today we will be looking at sample exposure plans to help you overcome your fears.

If you fear riding in the car as a passenger…

  • Sit in the car, with a safe person & the engine off for 1 hour
  • Sit in the car, with a safe person & the engine on for 1 hour
  • Ride with a safe person driving on quiet streets at a quiet time of day for a half-hour
  • Ride with a safe person driving on quiet streets at a quiet time of day for an hour
  • Ride with a safe person driving on a busier street and busier time of day for ½ hour
  • Ride with a safe person driving on a busier street and busier time of day for 1 hour
  • Ride with a safe person on the freeway at a quiet time of day for 1 hour
  • Ride with a safe person driving at a quiet time of the day to a specific place you want to go
  • Repeat the previous step but during a busier time of day

Is riding in a car as a passenger a fear of yours?
