Hello Faith,

Welcome to the forums.

Well Faith, getting panic attacks for fear of vomiting may seem weird, but how about panic attacks from getting panic attacks?  (That's how it was for me for a bit)  No matter how weird we may think we are, there is always somewhere weirder, or just as weird.  And as for your initial 3 questions, I'm Christian as well and I've pondered the same, and this is what I came up with (mind you just opinions, I'm a little blunt so I say what I feel but am VERY open to any other opinion):

1.  Fear does feel like a sin, it feels like a lack of trust. Personally this pushes me to let go, trust that the truth will come in time.  Go figure, a sin causes stronger faith.

2.  Fear is a habit.  Ever heard of Pavlov's theory?  It's a conditioned response.  But just like today becomes tomorrow, new things come whether we accept them or not.  Why not accept the one's we want, and thus start a new pattern?

3.  I agree, this is the new thing I'm coming to realize and have a great time with!

Nice to meet you too!  You already sound like you're well on your way!

Hi Faith and Birdie,   Thank you for sharing your thoughts and how your faith has helped you to find the strength and comfort you need to be able to overcome the fears.   As for the msn function, you need to click on Support Groups under the Community tab once you sign in. Then you will see a "Launch" tab just above the forums for discussion board. Click on that to activate msn..........this is a great way to stay connected with each other and keep the support coming.   Good luck,   Faryal, Health Educator

Birdie: I've told quite a few people about the phobia - my parents/sister/cousin, my husband, his sister and mom, and a whole whack of friends/teachers/people from my church including my pastor. All of my good friends know. It affects me so much that I can't imagine trying to hide it from anyone I spend a lot of time with or am really close to. A few people have also found out by accident - ie. people I wouldn't really have told - like a previous landlady, a nurse, who found me panicking one day. I had to tell her what was going on because she was worried, and she said she had never heard of emetophobia before! Alas, it is so little-known.

I hope the thing at your church goes well! I'm sure it will be one more step in your recovery.

And thanks for the welcome, minnesota! :)

I have something coming up at my church in a week or two where I may have to go in front of the church.  It would only be for less than five minutes and I wouldn't even have to speak but I am scared! I'm fearful of having a panic attack so I am going to have to face this fear because I really want to be involved. I know the anticipation will be the awful part. I'm hoping for an easy time of it so I can chalk it up to one more step in my recovery.
Good to hear you are recording you thoughts. I think I need to use what I've learned here and do that with this situation.  I too find that my anxiety is often predictable.  So, maybe I can break this pattern too!
Do others know about your phobia?  I'm still deciding who I'm willing to share with.  My husband knows, my mom, my sisters, my friend at work and my support group.  I still keep a lot to myself.

I've never done the instant messenger thing but I'll see if I can figure that out.  I'm super busy with kids in school now but I'm gonna try to keep up on here as best I can! That should settle down here in a week or two once we get into a routine.

Thank you birdie and Breanne!

My phobia is of vomiting, and I posted in one other (old) thread about it - I'm glad to know I'm not the only one on here :)

I started the program last Tuesday and have been recording my anxious thoughts and panic attacks since then. So I guess tomorrow I should start Session 2, right? I think I will keep recording things, because for some reason it really helps me to see how my thoughts get away with me. I've also noticed it's often at the same times of day, too, that I worry the most.

I agree, birdie - if we were perfect, we would never get caught up in worry, but since we're so far from perfect, we still do sometimes, and some of us more often than others! Everyone has at least one specific weakness I think. And I TOTALLY agree that this has brought me closer to God and is therefore a good thing in a way! I added you to my instant messenger thingee, I hope that's ok - I don't really know how to use it yet though, hehe.

I'm reading a really good book right now called Overcoming Fear, Worry, and Anxiety, written by a Christian lady, Elyse Fitzpatrick. I highly recommend it. In fact I would mail it to you if you wanted to read it after me, it's so good!!

Thanks again for the warm welcome :)

Faith,
Really glad you wrote! I am also a christian with the same thoughts as you. I have hoped I could discuss that with others here but haven't really brought up the subject to much.  I think fear can creep up on us and it isn't something we can always control.  Yes, we do have control but sometimes our imperfect selves react before we can stop it.  I think we all struggle with something to some degree.  Mine just happens to be anxiety. I actually think it has made me closer with God as I have had to depend on Him for strength.  He has answered marvelous requests for me and continues to amaze me with His love.  (Psalm 119:71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.) I think He is teaching me many things, one is to be dependent on Him and the other is to be compassionate with others.
Like to hear more of your thoughts!
Birdie
