\Wow, reading this post put so many things in perspevtive for me! See my fear of mental illnees is actually depression. I have, in the past suffered from very very deep depressions accompanied by great big feelings of total despair. and going back there scares the you know what out of me. So when i feel blue or sad for any reason i start worrying that i am going back there to the depression. But i can see that is is ok and normal to have sad days. But yeah i guess we all get scared of mental illness when we are anxious. Also, the depersonnalisation thing. I was wondering why i had so much trouble looking at myself in the mirror in periods where i was very anxious. Kept making me jumpy like i a stranger was staring at me ( i get that from my reflection in the windows sometimes too). Now that i know what it is and why i feel that way i feel a lot better lol. Thanks so much all of you for sharing all this in theese posts . Reading this has helped me understand a lot of things. -Diva

Thank you very much Warren and Isabella for your responses. I am happy to hear that I am not too weird after all, lol. I just always assumed 'my' case was different (but maybe this is a typical thing to think as well). I see now that in a way our cases are different but all rooted from the same thing. I suppose I need to try and just flow with the hazziness /blur /unfamiliarity during these times instead of having my eyes and ears peeled open to every little detail around me and getting spooked as a result. Thank you again...All other responses are welcome. :)

Maggie, I agree with Warren. The more you focus on those feelings of unreality, the more they will scare you. I just told myself that this is what my reality is like now and I stopped focusing on it and stopped worrying about it. I can't tell you how long it was before it went away because I just accepted it as normal since I was like that all the time. Anyways, it ended up going away so I wouldn't worry about it too much. It will eventually go away and you will be fine. I noticed that I got that feeling today, the "haziness" feeling, when I was in class and I was really anxious and my breathing was off. It went away though after I left class so I know it was just that stupid, relentless anxiety. My advice is to stop focusing on it and just rest assured knowing that it is just anxiety and not something else. ~Isabella~

I went through a period where I really feared that like non-reality feeling. You gotta convince yourself that it is just anxiety, what else would it be anyways? Panic attacks dont lead to schizophrenia, so dont worry. Nothing will happen during that weird non-reality moment. Try to run with it. This might sound weird, but it worked for me, try and enjoy or at least be interested in this weird experience, it can be kind of a interesting experience. I know it is very scary because it is so different but you gotta remember that you will be fine, and try to relax. Hope this helps. Take care :)

I am glad I've been of help to you too. I wanted to ask if there is anything I can do for the depersonalization/derealization other than to lower my stress levels and keep my anxiety in check? Also, I have read that it is infact normal to experience this type of dissociation even when not having an actual attack- do you know why this is? It's seems so weird to me that we can experience such differences in the feel of our realm, yet continue to be so coherent and normal... ***Sometimes I will look at my dog (if he is starring at me lol) and I will flinch- not because I am actually afraid of him but because he seems SO much more real to me or something. This type of awarness scares me and makes me think something is wrong again. This happened once or twice before and I thought I was losing it, now it is more or less habitual and I don't even have time to form the thought that things seem a bit odd- I just flinch. Other times I become very aware of my hands (almost as if seperate from my body) when I am typing- could all of this still be classified as forms of dissociation? I think I need to start changing my reactions to this symptom because I am starting to make myself feel like I am paranoid even though it's clear that I'm not. How do you/did you keep yourself from being frightened to death by these symptoms of dissociation? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated like always. Btw, I have experienced the not recognizing yourself in the mirror thing too- it's pretty scary.*** Thanks a bunch. I'm glad I can get all of this out without you thinking anything is too weird. I'm just not used to this symptom as much so I thought I would ask some questions and mention one or two examples just to clarify. :)

Isabella- You have been an absolute angel! Thank you SO much for all of your advice and words of encouragement. It makes me feel better to know that I am not abnormal and that these feelings of doom are still just anxiety. I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart, and hope to return the favour if you ever need some strenght sometime as well. :)
